frames/no frames

I currently have a site which has the index page immediately open
two frames. I put a music object in the top frame. That way the
music is not cut off when the user navigates to another page and
I certainly don't want to put the music on each page.

But, the page is not treated well by google as it has no
descriptive text to index so I would like to change it to a first
real page with text, but I don't want to lose the advantage of a
persistent page for the music.

Does anyone have any suggestion that would permit the music to
play one time even if the user navigates off the page ?

You might be able to do this by using a PHP require. If you read up
more about it, you should understand why.

"Before"? Then it's unlikely to happen on my browser, for example.

If I wasn't so fascinated to see just how many different sites feel
it's their g*d-given right to plant their cookies on me without any
explanation or by-your-leave, I would just turn the whole thing off,
and consider whitelisting the very few where I'm sufficiently
interested in the site and have been convinced that the cookie setting
is in /my/ interest, not just in theirs.

As it is, I have the browser set to throw an alert when cookies are
sent.

Visits to some sites bring a sheer overwhelming deluge of cookie
attempts, and often cause a corresponding number of sites to be added
to my banned list. Half a dozen different sites isn't unusual - ten
or a dozen is by no means a record. Almost always due to
advertisements added to the page that I was trying to access. What
/do/ these wretched advertisers think they are up to?

I'm happy with the music that's already playing, and *most* upset to
have it trampled on by something I hadn't asked for.

Of course, this isn't really about *me*, but just one sample of how
readers might respond.

Many sites think they are setting cookies when I view them. But my
cookies.txt file is marked read-only. This means all cookies are
session-only.

Further, my browser's options are set to reject any cookie that is not
for the domain I am currently viewing. Finally, I have black-listed
some domains so that cookies from them are rejected even if I do view
them (blocking cookies when a Web page has a frame or script that
references a different domain).

Also note that I usually have my speakers turned off.

But that's far too easy! At work, I often need to have audio or video
conferencing in progress, for which it's essential to have the
speakers (or headphones) in operation.

I'm sure you can imagine how "enjoyable" it is (on a scale of 0 to
minus 100) while web browsing alongside the conference session, to
have a web page come blaring out uninvited.

I don't hate *all* web sites with music. In fact, I'm listening to music
from http://www.jazz88fm.com/ as I type this. One of the first things
that I do every morning when I get to work is fire up KBEM's stream.

What I do hate is web sites that try to over-ride my musical choices
with theirs.

why not try a floating frame?
you should also consider adding some controls to stop the music playing
(keeps people like Dave happy)

There is a no music option, but 90 of the visitors elect the misic. What
is a floating frame ?

Floating frames are inline frames (iframe). They can be put anywhere on a
page you need them so you don't need a page with the frameset holders to
make up the site layout.

example code for an iframe:
<iframe name='ads' id='ads' src='[YOUR PAGE HERE]' frameborder='0'
scrolling='no' class='adpos'></iframe>

in the example, the class element uses 'adpos' from a css file (or inline
stylesheet if its the only one your going to use) to position the iframe
where you need it.
any links from a page positioned into the iframe are auto loaded into that
iframe.
links on the main page that need the content displayed inside the iframe,
need the 'a href' targeted to the iframes ID (which doesn't necessarily have
to match its name).
if you want to load back into the main page from the iframe then you need to
make sure your href includes target='main'
