I need expert advice on FREE web hosting!

Hello Anyone,
I have a number of candidate sites that I would want to launch to the www. Problem is: the whole business of paying for domain hosting etc is something I would like to avoid if I can.
Since I hear there's a whole lot of free hosts out there (and I run into the adverts every now and then), I now want to know:

What are the pros and cons of free hosting?
How would you rate and rank some of the 'best' free hosts out there?
Is 'free' hosting really free? Or rather, where are the hidden costs?

I'd be a million times grateful for helpful answers.
Thanks, Ifedi.

Well, free hosting is free, but you have to do things like upload everything to yourself, and there are usually size and feature constraints (if you want to use their SQL database, you have to pay for it, etc...). Free sites do not give you any sort of reliable uptime - you cannot get mad at them if your site goes down because you aren't paying for it, and usually have bandwidth limitations (if too many people visit your site at once, they'll just pull it). That being said, most hosting companies offer an SLA (Service Level Agreement) that says they will keep your site up for a certain percentage of the time, for a small fee.

Another caveat is that you will probably already have to have a domain registered, which can be found for under $10 a year, but I'm not sure.

Greetings to pgsql-general list members, I am configuring a server for my hosting company on which I would like to offer postgres shared hosting as an option. Postgres has been installed already but I'm having difficulty sequestering server access by shared accounts and generally could use some help in setting this up properly. I would greatly appreciate any advice from list members who might have experience doing this on a RH9/Apache...

I am new to this so please go easy. We currently have some students doing some work on some web based tracking documents for us. They are currently using VB .net to develop what we requested. Anyway I've been calling my local ISP's and no one supports .net it seems to be all apache and MySQL. I'm wondering if everyone here can answer a few questions. 1) Can I run vb .net web pages on a regular IIS server without the .net extensions? 2)...

Hello everyone, This is my first attempt at getting help in this manner. Please forgive me if this is an inappropriate request. I suddenly find myself in urgent need of instruction on how to communicate with a MySQL database table on a web server, from inside of my company's Access-VBA application. I know VBA pretty well but have never before needed to do this HTTP/XML/MySQL type functions.

I need some very basic advice. Let's suppose I need to do some mysql queries and updates to a database. I also need to dynamically update parts of a web page that the user is looking at based on the results of these queries. What are my options for server-side scripting languages and what you recommend. I've heard quite about about Ruby on Rails--does that cover everything php does or is php a better way to go. Thanks!

I just moved to another company that's mainly a Java/.NET shop. I was happy to find out that there's a movement from the grassroot to try to convince the boss to use a dynamic language for our development! Two of the senior developers, however, are already rooting for Ruby on Rails--although they haven't tried RoR themselves. When I suggested Django, they went like, "what's that?". I said, "It's like the Python counterpart of RoR".

I help manage a large web site, one that has over 600 html pages... It's a reference site for ham radio folks and as an example, one page indexes over 1.8 gb of on-line PDF documents. The site is structured as an upside-down tree, and (if I remember correctly) never more than 4 levels. The site basically grew (like the creeping black blob) ... all the pages were created in Notepad over the last

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
