SELECTIVITY Clause, ( & when will the optimiser have hints) ?

Hi,

I'm sure I read somewhere that the SELECTIVITY Clause cannot be used
with static
SQL, can anybody confirm/deny this?

Also, at the risk of a philosophical war, when will the optimizer
provide for some real
form of hints. It is so very, very painful and very, very time consuming
trying to work around bad optimizer plans. I know IBM think it is
perfect, but I'm afraid for poor ol' struggling
developers who are trying to get things working, it is a very serious
limitation not being
able to TELL the optimiser what to do, when it is clearly getting
something horribly wrong.

PS. I am not an Oracle Spy, (as I once accused at a Tech. Conference),
just somebody who lives in the real world where the pain of this is
felt daily.

Selectivity works for static SQL as well.
It actually should even work in SQL PL procedures with SQL variables.

W.r.t. hints it's not so much the hint as such that causes folks like me
to get nauseous. It's the idea of embedding the hint in the SQL
statement that I (and others) think is 'orrible.
So if you ever change your mind you need to go into the application
code. And you constantly need to fix the same thing over and over again.
ISVs who want to write portable code hate hints.

There is a lot of recognition that users need a reasonable way to nudge
the optimizer when it goes astray. After all when you pick up the phone
and raise a sev 1 PMR on a Friday afternoon because a query goes sour
you're not the only one who's not happy :-(

To make a short story long:
Hints: Yes, in the future,
"SELECT /*Index: blah */ ...": I hope never.

Cheers

Serge,

That gives me a warmer feeling than a lot of other feedback I've had
on the subject. I agree, hardcoded hints would be nasty, but some environment
method, registry etc..... would be great.

We've had many weeks of frustrating development, and this was me being a bit
of the "messenger" .

Many thanks.

Paul.

I recently had the displeasure of looking at the code required to implement the pop-up menus used in a pulldown menu system for a webpage. The sheer amount of Javascript required was amazing and frankly revolting. It is as though the software "engineers" have been thrown out and replaced with "programmers". That is to say, it is a sophomoric hack job, a hideous kludge.

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...
