MS access security warning

2 New Member
An 'unknown publisher' security warning appears everytime I open an ms access .mdb file, if I just click 'open' I am able to open the file, however the desktop shortcuts to this file simply won't work and I have to open the database by opening ms access first then navigating to the .mdb file. Can anyone help? I run ms access 2003.

You say the shortcut won't work. Have you tried opening the database directly at source.

This usually happens when Access is installed on a network rather than the individual machine. For some reason the machine won't recognise the file type.

You could try using the right click option Open With ... choosing the appropriate version of access and ticking the always use to open this type of file option.

Also if the database was designed in a previous version than Access 2003 you may need to convert the database to the new version even though it opens in Access 2003.

Thanks. I have tried your suggestions for the shortcut by right clicking and choosing open with and selecting the 'always open with..' but it didn't help. The database was designed with and earlier version of access but has been running fine in access 2003 for months and still opens ok but its just that shortcuts don't work. would you suggest a reinstall of access to see if that resolves the problem?

The problem could actually lie with the security on your system. e.g. Nortons Security Features have been known to affect access databases.

Not my area of expertise, but if you think this is a possibility that this might be the problem I will try to lookup the references I've seen to it so far.

I've installed SP8. Why does ACCW2K3 insist on reminding me, upon attempting to open an MDB: 1: that unsafe expressions are not blocked (I don't care; this is an internal protected app); 2: that when I say "no", a hugo largo window pops up, advising me that I have to install SP8 to block unsafe expressions (I've already a) installed SP8 and b) told Access that I don't want to block them; and 3: of a final security warning that restates...

Last week I posted as follows, but no-one responded: " I have security level 'Medium' and expression blocking set. If I set security to 'Low', I get a dialog box which asks if I want to enable expression evaluation. Irrespective of whether I respond 'Yes' or 'No', the security level now shows as 'Low' and databases open thereafter without any warning dialogs. The only operational difference is that I'm prompted to restart Access if I...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
