XHTML error: Attribute 'for' is not a valid attribute of element 'script'.

1 New Member
Hi,

I am porting an ASP.NET Javascript/C# application from .NET framework 1.x (everything works there) to 2.0 on Windows Server 2003 SP1, and experieced problem (null reference) while trying to raise a custom event ("DisplayMessag eRequested"). The web page exposes the event in a user control hosted in Internet Explorer 6.0. The Javascript event handler uses Microsoft specific 'for and 'event' syntax as shown below:

<script type="text/javascript"
for="wkflCtl"
event="DisplayM essageRequested "
language="javas cript">
displayMessageD ialog(wkflCtl.m essage1,
wkflCtl.selecte dLots,
wkflCtl.selecte dJobID);
</script>

where wkflCtl is the object id of the user control applet loaded into the web page.

VS.2005 gives the following errors for both 'for' and 'event' attibutes:

Error 69 Validation (XHTML 1.0 Transitional): Attribute 'for' is not a valid attribute of element 'script'.

Two questions:
1) I have <xhtmlConforman ce mode="Legacy" /> under system.web in my web.config. Could I safety ignore the above error? or this error causes the event handler displayMessageD ialog not registered (and thus the null reference error while trying to raise the event)?
2) I tried to use attachEvent (in OnLoad) but has two questions:
a) it only accepts standard event handler
b) the user control is not yet loaded when OnLoad is executed.

Thanks for your help.

Tom

Is there any logical reason why one should convert if css is already being used? What possible, immediate, benefit would there be? I am at a loss to see what, pragmatic, difference it would make.

How is it that Microsoft sits on the w3c, participates in XHTML standardization and then completely misses the ball with asp.net? Does Microsoft have any plans/announcements/concern whatsover with making asp.net generate valid XHTML? It seems like these changes would be fairly trivial for them, much easier than it would be for me to write a filter and/or override the necessary classes. ~PJ

Can someone offer suggestions why, on the same server (Apache 2.2.8), this works <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01//EN"> <html lang="en-US"> <head> <link rel=stylesheet type="text/css" href="proj_default.css" title="ss_default"> <title>Testing html</title> </head>

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
