Inputing a specific line from a text file into a variable

22 New Member
Hi

Excuse my ignorance but I am trying to write a very simple program. It needs to be simple because of my lack of knowledge. Anyway I would like to input a specific line from a textfile without having to load all the previous lines first into unused variables before I get to the line I want. For example this is a copy of one of my text files

1
10
A Name

This textfile has 3 usable lines of information and I require only the second line. At the moment I am having to do something like this.

Input #1, Unused Variable 1
Input #1, Unused Variable 2
Line Input #1, Variable Used

I am using a Line Input statement as the line sometimes consists of characters which get lost with a simple Input statement.
Any hints would be appreciated.

Thanks

I have been trying to edit the Explorer example by Dev Ashish I found on www.msvp.org (I think). I have been all over the net so I am not quite sure where the file came from. I like the way it works but I can not find a way to tell it to display a certain directory. I want it to display a folder on our share drive. I know the path for the directory. I want users to be able to open any files below the parent directory I tell it to start in....

Hi, I'm trying to store all of my data into one file (there're about 140 things to keep track of). I have no problem reading a specific string from the array file, but I wasn't sure how to replace just one item. I know I can get the entire array, then save the whole thing (with a for loop and if statements so that the changed data will be saved), but it seems like a lot of unnecessary reading and writing. Is there a way to directly save...

Hello. Could anyone please show me an example of how to retrieve a specific line of a text file (say line 3 of data.txt) into a string variable? I have seen many examples on how to dump all the content into a string, and how to read line-by-line consecutively, but how can i read just 1 specific line? Thank you.

I have a need to input a large tab delimited text file, which I will parse to check it has the expected columns, before allowing the user to submit it to the database. The user may paste the file into a textbox, or upload it (haven't decided yet). The problem I have is that the text file consists of around 3000 lines, and I want to display the formatted columns to the user before submitting it to the database (perhaps allowing them to...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
