Capturing audio from a microphone on Mac OS X

Hi,
This might seem a dumb question, but every search I've done so far has come
up blank - with the possible exception of Schtoom. I've seen Schtoom that
does manage to capture audio under Mac OS X, but it's unclear whether the
audio tools it uses can be used independently of Schtoom.

So my question this: does anyone know of a library or simple approach
to capturing audio (any quality :) from a microphone on Mac OS X ?
Specifically something that works with Mac OS X 10.3, with python 2.3 .

Ideally, something like the approach that pyalsaaudio[*] takes would be
great, but at this stage I suspect that the number of available examples
out there is small, so I'm more than happy to take something and adapt it.[*] http://sourceforge.net/projects/pyalsaaudio/

I haven't searched for something similar under windows yet, I'm hoping
that's less problematic (famous last works).

Thanks in advance to anyone who replies,
Michael.

Hello Michael,

Specifically something that works with Mac OS X 10.3, with python 2.3 . You can use portaudio (http://www.portaudio.com/) and SWIG
(http://www.swig.org) it.
Thanks in advance to anyone who replies,

You're welcome.

I had an idea for something that I can't find any evidence if it exists, or if it can be done. I assume it can be done. What I'd like to be able to do, is to allow people who come to my website, click a button on the page to begin submitting an audio stream to the server. Basically, once the "record" button was hit by the client, an audio stream would be generated by the client's microphone and would be sent over port 80 (just like...

I wanted to make a Java application which would dial a telephone number using the modem. When the person on the other end lifts up the telephone (answers the phone), the application should start playing an audio file(eg. .wav file). The approach I took was using the Java Communications API(javax.comm.). As my modem is connected to the serial port on my computer I send AT commands to make the phone call (ATDT2222222). This is working...

Hi Can anyone tell me how I can stream audio input from a microphone input in C/C++? I would prefer plain C/C++, rather than DirectX/Windows programming, though those would be fine too. Also, how can i read/write wav files using file handles? Thanks a lot Srikanth

Guys: Hi there. Recently I'll have to write a quite interesting program in Python on a Linux box. What I need is a function which allows the user to 'switch' the audio output from <an audio file>/<microphone>/<line in>. I'm not quite familiar with Linux programming. I've checked some python media frameworks but still need some light. Does anybody have experience on this? Thanks in advance!

I have been searching how to do sound capture (record audio input) in VB.NET for days now. I find some references to "winmm.dll" calls, but they give VB5 or VB6 examples which won't code convert upgrade to VB.NET without warnings errors that I can understand how to fix. There's some ActiveX and OCX's floating around, some free some not, but in all cases they don't explain or give me access to the raw PCM data in some kind of familiar...

I am using Window's Vista and am trying to use speech recognition. I have an audio file of an interview (only one person talking, and quite clearly) but I want to use Speech Recognition to turn it into a Word or Wordpad document. Does anyone know the right way to do this? When I speak into the microphone, it picks up all of my words clearly, but when I play the audio file into the microphone, the computer doesn't recognize a single word,...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
