University Research: Survey about searching for open source code on the Internet

Are you a programmer? Have you ever had to search for open source code?

We are surveying programmers on how they search for open source
software on the web, as part of our project at the University of
California, Irvine. We're looking for fairly basic information, such as
what tools you use and what types of source code you look for. Our
research project aims at improving open source code search engines,
based on features programmers actually need, when they search source
code repositories. So next time you're waiting for a compile, or if
you're having a quiet day, take 15 minutes and fill out the survey at:

http://calla.ics.uci.edu/recruit/scs.html

Any anecdotes, comments, or ideas that you have will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your participation.
(Please note that you have to be 18 or older, to fill out this survey.)

First of all, can I reassure you that this posting is NOT spam and not market research. Please feel free to email me at the address below to check/validate this message prior to doing the survey if you wish. I'm doing a piece of research looking at industry perceptions of computing graduates. The motivation behind this work is that I know a lots of academics who claim to know what industry wants, and lots of people in the industry who...

I'm doing some trivial surveys, and I want to know if the same user answers twice. Can't really know that, but at least I thought I could check for the same browser/computer combination by using a cookie. Here is the code I have now. In the header, I have the following: <SCRIPT language="JavaScript"> var cookieStatus; if (document.cookie.length > 0) { cookieStatus = 'Cookie exists with value ' + document.cookie; } else {

I've written several survey systems in which the majority of the questions have the same or similar responses (Yes/No, True/False, scale of 1 - 5, etc). But this latest survey system I'm working on has 8-10 sections, with a variety of question attributes and answer scales. Some items have just a description and require a Yes/No answer, others have a description and an active status and require a Yes/No and price answer, some require a...

Hi, As part of a small research paper I am writing for a Web Technologies module making up part of my university degree, I am conducting a brief survey to gauge what active users of PHP think of the programming technology. The aim of the paper is to compare PHP with Ruby on Rails, and there is therefore a similar survey that will be completed by Ruby on Rails users. Any results collected will be extremely useful for my paper

Greetings all, I would like to create a list, for an upcoming OINK-PUG presentation on TDD & BDD in PHP, of open source PHP applications that are well covered with unit and functional tests. Ideally, I would like to run the test suite of one such application at some point during the presentation. It matters not to me what testing framework is used.

Most computers default to English, but sometimes we require a different language, especially when relocating. Forgot to request a specific language before your computer shipped? No problem! You can effortlessly switch the default language on Windows 10 without reinstalling. I'll walk you through it. First, let's disable language synchronization. With a Microsoft account, language settings sync across devices. To prevent any complications,...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
