Newbie question on ORA-12560

Hello,

Sorry if this is an rudimentary question. I checked the
newsgroup archive but did not get an answer that matched
closely with my situation. I am very new to Oracle9i so
please bear with me.

Yes, I am getting the dreaded ORA-12560 error while trying
to log onto sql*plus in Oracle 9i on Win2k.

ORA-12560: TNS: protocol adapter error.

The problem is that it all works for few days without any
problem. Then all on a sudden apparently for no reason
(no new software loaded etc.) I seem to get this error.

Earlier, I have re-installed the whole thing but I am sure
gurus over here must have some better strategy.

I saw mention of stack tracing (?) etc, I will be happy to
provide the stack trace if somebody can tell me how to do
it.

Thanks,
- M

OK, I have solved my problem and thought I would let others
know if anybody faces the same problem.

Basically, I followed the steps given in:

<URL: http://groups.google.c om/groups?q=ORA-12560+debugging &hl=en&lr=&ie=U TF-8&safe=on&selm= vGCV9.318%24I9. 21410908%40news svr15.news.prod igy.com&rnum=1>

For some reason, I could not log in as system/manager, but then
the regular login started working (which was all that I wanted).

Thanks to the original poster of the above.

I'm using OCI on Mac OS X and I've run into a strange problem with my TNSNAMES.ORA file. My TNSNAMES.ORA file has one entry INV4II and it works fine. However, it will only work if that is the name of the entry. If I use any other name for that entry I get the dreaded ORA-12154. For example: TNSNAMES.ORA -> INV4II Application -> INV4II :: works fine TNSNAMES.ORA -> INV4DEV Application -> INV4DEV :: ORA-12154 TNSNAMES.ORA -> INV4DEV...

Hi, First off, I am aware that this is a very heavily documented error and I have done my homework for throughly researching probable causes before deciding to post my problem here. At this point, I believe another set of eyes on the issue is merited. I am a MSSQL DBA and somewhat new to ORACLE; but I have read the administrators manual having a basic thorough level of knowledge (Tho' I am still learning) and understanding of how to...

This is highly unusual. I do this only out of desperation. I am DB2 DBA on unix and recent had to take on Oracle admin as well. This question is really about Oracle export/import. Why I post here ( please allow me once ) because I posted at the other Google Oracle main group and it's surprising under-attended, very few recent posters and lots of spams. I ask here because some of you would have been experienced Oracle DBA as well. I...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Dear forum friends, With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. I'm particularly interested in Zigbee because I've heard it does some...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
