Oracle inactive connections

We have a couple of Oracle (8.x and 9.x) install on Sun Solaris
platforms. On most of the servers we have a very strange problem

1. When Oracle is started in the morning, memory usage is very low.
2. During the course of the day the memory the memory increases upto
50-60GB
3. When I check the active connections in Oracle (v$session table), I
find that out of 80-100 connections, only 5-10 are active whereas the
others are inactive.

I find it hard to believe that Oracle does not automatically close
these inactive connections. Do I have to do this manually or am I
missing something very elementary here ?

Please assist.

Using Oracle 8i enterprise on win 2000 (sp3) Installed the standard configuration & whenever I make a connection it takes about 10 secs. It's running on a P1900 with 1gb Ram so no reason there for slowness. Once I'm connected the queries work pretty much instantanously but to connect using SQLPLUS, Toad, ODBC, OLEDB all take about 10 secs. I connect using OLEDB from Visual Basic development environment & after the 1st connection...

hey all, I realize that this question might pop up from time to time, but I haven't seen it a while and things might of changed, so - Right now (July 2004) how does mysql stand up in comparison to oracle? We are seriously considering migrating our multi-processor oracle system to mysql to save on licensing costs, and would need several features that mysql may or may not have:

Hi, it would be fantastic if anyone could suggest a solution to this problem. I've written an ASP.Net (VB) application which uses stored procedures in Oracle. All seems fine, except occasionally I get the error below: System.Data.OracleClient.OciHandle.op_Implicit(OciHandle x) +23 System.Data.OracleClient.TracedNativeMethods.OCIAttrGet(OciHandle trgthndlp, Int32& attributep, Int32& sizep, ATTR attrtype, OciHandle

Hi, we got a strange problem connecting to an Oracle database onsite with our PHP application: During CSV import job handled by our application, PHP opens up to some hundred connections to the database. It then eventually fails to connect to the database due to the high number of open connections. We are not able to reproduce this behaviour on our internal installations, we get up to 30 connections until the job is finished.

Hi, I have a few apps written in PHP, running on Fedora Core. After porting these applications from PostgreSQL to Oracle a bug appeared: sometimes, not in a reproducable manner, the web page does not appear in the browser and after examining the html source in the browser I notice that the code is cut in half, somewhere after about the first 3-4 kbytes. It happens quite often, once in every two minutes. The problem was not

I need to connect to an Oracle database. I've never done it before. I see that with framework 1.1 you had to download ODP.NET from Oracle's site in order for the framework classes to even work. I tried that quickly, but the file is 400 MB, and the the installation asks for all kinds of things in order to install. Now I'm very confused. a) Do you still need ODP.NET with framework 2.0? b) Do you need to download and install other...

Most computers default to English, but sometimes we require a different language, especially when relocating. Forgot to request a specific language before your computer shipped? No problem! You can effortlessly switch the default language on Windows 10 without reinstalling. I'll walk you through it. First, let's disable language synchronization. With a Microsoft account, language settings sync across devices. To prevent any complications,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
