Req: Info on XML Document Management Systems

I am looking for an XML document management systems that might meet my
requirements. The group I work for produces a great deal of reports
and documents. These documents can be quite long (~300+ pages).
Currently, MS Word is used to produce these. I believe there would be
significant advantages to switching to XML as an underlying document
format, the primary advantage being separating document content from
the presentation and delivery mechanisms.

The issue is that I can't seem to find any products that may be suited
to the task - the vast majority of XML editors are geared towards
programmers (like me), or users who would have a detailed
understanding of XML, rather than abstracting the idea of XML and
simplifying the job of writing a report, without having to worry about
styles and formatting and other issues besides the content being
produced. And since I am a lone developer, trying to build something
like this is not a viable option (but integrating pieces of other
solutions definitely would be).

Here is the wishlist of features I'd like to see in a
product/solution:

* Provide a server-based XML document repository, where documents and
reports would be organized, indexed, searchable, version controlled.
Ideally this would be a cross-platform product.

* A "report" or "document" in the repository must be able to consist
of a number of files, and include other files like images or videos.

* Accept customized XML DTDs and stylesheets for content structure and
presentation. It should be able to produce transformed documents
on-the-fly. Ideally, these documents could be requested through a web
service request to integrate with existing portals and products. While
Docbook provides an excellent structure, it may be too complicated for
my users (especially to start), and I need the option of using other
DTDs.

* Provide a very easy-to-use editor (preferably web-based, maybe a
Java Applet) This should be extremely intuitive for non-XML experts to
use, and allow the content to be edited in a way that matches the
content structure. XMLMind is the best editor I've found so far (the
Conglomerate screenshots look good too, but I need a Windows
solution), but I believe there should be an even simpler one out
there, with more polish.

* Be reasonably priced.

Other "nice-to-haves":
* Be friendly with MS Word and email documents
* Integrate with Active Directory, allowing customized/filtered
viewing of the repository based on access controls.
* Integrate with a workflow management tool
* Provide a way for certain users to digitally sign reports (via
Entrust PKI)
* Be open-source

Could anyone please offer any input? I was quite surprised when I
started my search for a product like this and haven't found anything
suitable yet. I welcome feedback from sales types as well, assuming
the product fits the requirements I have laid out.

Thanks,
Tim Sawlor

Hi! Im working on some research for a asset management system. We will use python as our primary platform. As a opensource programmer the obvious question is; are there any opensource systems available? I found an article about ilm's system (story from python.org), sounds very interesting. Im looking for more information about similar systems (of course python based!), all feedback is welcome!

Hi folks, I have been mulling over an idea for a very simple python-based personal document management system. The source of this possible solution is the following typical problem: I accumulate a lot of files (documents, archives, pdfs, images, etc.) on a daily basis and storing them in a hierarchical file system is simple but unsatisfactory:

Hello, I work for an attorney staff, so basically the whole day they are sending themselves a lot and a lot of papers (Word docs or Excell sheets). We are going to propose them the use of a Document Exchange and Database System (like Lotus Notes or Oracle Managment Content, formerly known as Internet File System IFS ) with .NET interfazes. Basically the idea is that instead of sending papers the whole day,

A sane document management approach: I manage my documents with a key, composed with some fields of my XML documents. When I have to refer to documents, I use a canonical form of the key so that I can use classical links such as <a href="..."> This canonical form is naturally an URN The problem when using URN, is that the sub-scheme must be registered, otherwise collisions may happen if somebody else decide to use the same name,...

Hello, I really, really, need some help here - I've spent hours trying to find a solution. In a nutshell, I'm trying to have a user input a value in form's textfield. Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...
