Is there a Microsoft Document Exchange and Database System like Lotus Notes or Oracle Managment Content?

Hello,

I work for an attorney staff, so basically the whole day they are
sending themselves a lot and a lot of papers (Word docs or Excell
sheets).

We are going to propose them the use of a Document Exchange and
Database System (like Lotus Notes or Oracle Managment Content,
formerly known as Internet File System IFS ) with .NET interfazes.
Basically the idea is that instead of sending papers the whole day,
they can use a software to check and manage more quickly their
documents.

We are looking for a system that allows us to manage:

- Security
- Versioning
- Folders
- Check-in/Check-out
- Workflow
- Search and Retrieval
- Extensible Metadata

My question is:

1) Is there any Microsoft tool who can help us to achieve that
(management of codes, dates, text, names of documents- I mean like a
Document Exchange and Database System) with .NET interface?

2) Or do we have to built it from scratch?

Thank you very much!

Jorge,

Have you look at Microsoft Sharepoint Portal Server
http://www.microsoft.com/sharepoint/

Not sure about .net integration (yet) but it seems to offer most of what
you're after, and it integrates in well with Office.

The product you want has been called Sharepoint, team services and is
now called wss. It is built into windows 2003 server. That is it runs
on 2003, with no additional license cost, but it's not on the CD, it's
a download. It's dot net based and very nice. You do need win 2k3
though. It will also work best on new versions of office. Some aspects
of what you mention are available in Portal Services (advanced search
for one) which is a costed add-on. You may not need that though.

Hi Jorge,

Picked up your question on the Yahoo news/questions group (as below).

I run a small firm that develops, markets and maintains a document
management platform called Trackfile. In reading your question on
Yahoo - our software does what you require and a whole lot more. We
basically track any electronic file e.g. documents, emails, folders,
graphics, video, audio - hence the reason for the name Trackfile.

Trackfile has been in production for over 10 years (now in its 4th
version) with many of our clients being law firms. Trackfile is
web-based, is written in Java and via JDBC will operate on any
database (currently we have sites working on Oracle, SQL Server and
Postgress).

Our current law firm clients range range in size from 15 users to 2000
users. Other clients we have include Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu, CSC &
Ericsson. We regularly go head-to-head with the big firms in document
management - Documentum, OpenText, iManage, Hummigbird. We provide 90%
functionality of these big end systems for about 20% to 30% of the
cost.

Jorge, please let me know if the above interests you.

Thanks for your time & attention.

Warm regards

James

Is .NET compatability a requirement?

Also check out http://www.filenet.com, http://www.documentum.com, and http://www.hummingbird.com.
All of these vendors (and others) make document management systems that go above and beyond what
Microsoft can do with Sharepoint today.
