ado.NET - Getting connected to a computer with a dynamic IP address

3 New Member
I wrote a ADO.NET ( VB.NET language) database application with the data database itself located on a SQL SERVER 2005 Express on my desktop.
The application database is on my laptop. My laptop as well as my desktop are connected to the internet. (cable -Telenet )
I have heard that the provider regulary change my IP address, and that's precisely the problem for my connectionstrin g to the data database on my desktop.
I thought that it should be possible to make a connection with my desktop from anwhere with my laptop via the internet, but it seems to be not so evident.
Is the thinking of making a connection via the internet here a mon realistic idea, and is ADO.NET solely usable in a LAN network or a WAN network with fixed IP Addresses? Or is the solving of this problem only the use of ASP.NET ?

You want to migrate your sql database to the same relm as your host - I hope you have establised your connection string as a global varable so you will be able to easily switch it to the new connection string of your host.

I'd say SQL express is more of a Development tool that one that you want to use with your app once your pushing it live. Plus even if you were using it, you dont want to host anything from your home pc out over your cable connetion. You want to get a host if you want it avialable online. Not only do you face the dynamic IP issue - your opening your ports up to the world - not wise.

Hope this helps

I'm looking to try to get a users MAC and/or NetBIOS name when they visit my website. It somehow can be done, I'm not sure with PHP, but it can be done. Does anyone have any idea how? As an example check out: http://stealthtests.lockdowncorp.com/ On that site, there are tests that will display NetBIOS & MAC addresses.

I just discovered that this: Dim searcher As New Management.ManagementObjectSearcher("SELECT NetConnectionStatus FROM Win32_NetworkAdapter") For Each networkAdapter As Management.ManagementObject In searcher.Get() does not work on Win2K to get the network connection status! Does anyone have some samples on how to do this same thing on Win2K? Thanks!

Hello! We have a company intranet based on ASP (Win2k, IIS 5.0, SQLServer 7.0). For security purpose, my boss wants to block some employees from logging in to our intranet except for from our factory. Our factory has a SBC DSL (one dynamic IP and it's shared). I know how to get the client pc's IP address. But as the IP address is dynamic, I cannot depend on it. Is there a way that I can detect the user is accessing from our factory

Most computers default to English, but sometimes we require a different language, especially when relocating. Forgot to request a specific language before your computer shipped? No problem! You can effortlessly switch the default language on Windows 10 without reinstalling. I'll walk you through it. First, let's disable language synchronization. With a Microsoft account, language settings sync across devices. To prevent any complications,...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Dear forum friends, With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
