Why Windows Lost The Battle for the Desktop

The war of the OSes was won a long time ago.

Unix has always been, and will continue to be, the Server OS in the form
of Linux.

Microsoft struggled mightily to win that battle -- creating a poor man's
DBMS, a broken email server and various other /application/ servers to
try and crack the Internet and IS markets.

In the case where they didn't spend their own money to get companies to
install servers, they failed miserably, and the 1 Billion per quarter
Linux market is testament to that.

But, what M$ didn't want you to know, is that the only reason they
wanted to dominate the server, is to protect their desktop and office
applications market.

Seal up the server, and the desktop is safe; cede the server, and the
desktop will fall.

And so it is...falling into the hands of Linux.

Hi General_Protect ion, Re: The Muzio JM-200 half-gig Flash player I bought,
You asked me: << Does your ex-wife know you're spending money on gadgets
that's supposed to go to your kids ? >>

My ex makes 20 times what I make in a year,
20 x $3,000 or $60,000

for those just tuning in to the JR saga.
and the two kids in question are independently living adults.
I guess leaving you at an early age was to their mental benefit.
I rarely spend that kind of money,
but good sound is right at the top of my list.

Give me TruBass **, 3D stereophonic sound,
a large rotating disk as the volume control, instant FM recording,
my own intro/exit/screen_saver designs played on an OLED screen, etc.
then toss in some big-ass Sennheisers ( HD-580 or 600 )
and I'm as happy as a clam at high tide.

** SRS’ TruBass: Deep Bass Enrichment.
Creates incredible deep rich bass from all speaker types and headphones.
This patented technique based on
psychoacoustic theories of the human hearing system, allows a person
to perceive significantly deeper, richer low bass tones that are far beyond
the physical low frequency capabilities of the speaker itself.

You need a Terretec Fun Aureon.

It has great ALSA drivers.

Hi Moe_Green ( John ), I made about 5 thousand in 2004,
and my ex and her husband probably made around 150 thousand, from what I hear,
they live in a very nice neighborhood, two blocks from my brother Pete
( Pete's one of EMC.COM's top salesmen )
....so that's about 30 times what I made, not 20.

Re: My sound system, You told me: <<

No thanks, I know who's getting the better sound, and it's not you.

Linux is ten times the price of Micro-Soft.

Just in terms of difficulty to use alone.

Why do you have to pay for MS products ?
Because the code is Designed/Tested for the common man,
and that costs money.

The telephone.

The greatest client app ever created.

The PC has been trying to catch up every since.

Bill Gate$ failed to 'sell' the PC to the consumer.

That took Yahoo! and Amazon and e-Bay and Google.

Now they rule the roost...and they choose Linux

They demand a PC as solid and simple as the telephone.

Not a flake-fest geekwagon built by Winks!

The People want a telephone, that talks to the Web and let's them order
CDs, and talk with their friends.

Am exploring a couple Linux distros... to find one that can use to replace
BG's "Winders". See'in as how am tired of usin BG's "Payphone" when i could
borrow Linus Torvalils' cell phone & use his free Unlimited minutes !
Would rather crack a book, ask some questions & check out the path less
traveled.
Anyone* can throw a couple $100 bills @ BG every couple years...but bein of
Norwegian heritage (cheap) am not diggin the "blackmail pmts" !!!
....also tired of constantly downloading/updating antivirus & Adware

couldnt afford that extra couple hundred bucks every couple years !

Yesterday I worked on using Reflection emit to build dynamic enums for web
method client side validation.

It's very, very cool.

First you set up an Enum.

Then you create a script to define the enum ( the way you would in an old
language like c/c++ ). Then you save the script, and at run time, compile
it to an assembly -- then you use the assembly to define the enum.

I have been a professional coder since 1984. Not down and dirty, though. The
environments I have worked in (Real time, embedded) have always required
high quality code.

Oh really ? It's all that spotless is it ?

Then you wouldn't mind showing us some of it then ?

A screen-shot of your code in your editor ( IDE ) would be nice.

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...
