Why Windows Lost The Battle for the Desktop

The war of the OSes was won a long time ago.

Unix has always been, and will continue to be, the Server OS in the form
of Linux.

Microsoft struggled mightily to win that battle -- creating a poor man's
DBMS, a broken email server and various other /application/ servers to
try and crack the Internet and IS markets.

In the case where they didn't spend their own money to get companies to
install servers, they failed miserably, and the 1 Billion per quarter
Linux market is testament to that.

But, what M$ didn't want you to know, is that the only reason they
wanted to dominate the server, is to protect their desktop and office
applications market.

Seal up the server, and the desktop is safe; cede the server, and the
desktop will fall.

And so it is...falling into the hands of Linux.

God! That bothered me five minutes after I posted it -- but I thought
and wait and see if there was someone smart enough to notice !

I should also note that #include <cstdio> is now the standard,
though #include <iostream> is certainly usable if one's using
the '<<' operator.

cstdio -- really? thanks, that's a new one to me.

Me too...although it's only for C++, at least on Gentoo.

It's valid Microsoft Visual C++ 7.1, I just compiled and ran it.
Even at the highest warning level and with Warnings as Errors ,
not one line had to be changed or added.

This does not suprise me. However this does not alter the fact it is invalid
C.

From the comp.lang.c FAQ:

11.12a: What's the correct declaration of main()?

A: int main(int argc, char *argv[]) .

11.12b: Can I declare main() as void, to shut off these annoying "main
returns no value" messages?

A: No.

....

11.15: The book I've been using always uses void main().

A: It's wrong.

this argument is dumb.

linux is ten times better than windows, and is free. windows is expensive
and in reality bites, as far as reliability and functionality. the only thing
they have going for them is inertia. i say inertia because they are just
coasting on the momentum they picked up during the nineties. trust me, if
windows was the same product that it is and was through all this time, and so
was Linux, and their roles were reversed, there would be no M$. anyone who
knows anything knows that an upstart product has to be at least TEN times
better and cheaper just to compete with an established standard. dont get me
wrong, M$ was needed to help bring a standard to market during the growing
years of the PC, but Bill Gates has done nothing special. he didnt make DOS,
he bought it and modded it, and then marketed it. thats it. and stole
everything else including SUN's project Looking Glass to use in Long Horn.
the real cost is businesses spending money to train people on a new system.
anyone who knows anything about the economy knows that all the money is in
the hands of the businesses, and if they switch the standard (which IS
HAPPENING) to Linux, the retail sector will follow suite real quick. Linux is
getting much more user friendly, and that is why many companies are making
software for Linux now. why do you think M$ opening markets against Linux now
as a full product, at least in the server market. for years they'd be damned
if they even acknoleged that Linux was in fact real. "Linux? whats that?"
they of course will take the same approach to desktops. why do you think
they are promoting all these different products like XBOX and search engines
what not? because they are on the run and are doing everything they can to
survive. a company that big has to have 20 year plans becuase they are just
too big. they are scared of Linux, and that's why they paid SCO billions of
dollars to sue Linux, of course it was all hush hush and PRed to death about
being just a "lisencing" deal. Soon their won't be much of M$ left.

Of course, as you pointed out, that depends largely on the language you
are using. In Ada, IIRC, it's <>.

Hi General_Protect ion, Re: The Muzio JM-200 half-gig Flash player I bought,
You asked me: << Does your ex-wife know you're spending money on gadgets
that's supposed to go to your kids ? >>

My ex makes 20 times what I make in a year,
and the two kids in question are independently living adults.

I rarely spend that kind of money,
but good sound is right at the top of my list.

Give me TruBass **, 3D stereophonic sound,
a large rotating disk as the volume control, instant FM recording,
my own intro/exit/screen_saver designs played on an OLED screen, etc.
then toss in some big-ass Sennheisers ( HD-580 or 600 )
and I'm as happy as a clam at high tide.

** SRS’ TruBass: Deep Bass Enrichment.
Creates incredible deep rich bass from all speaker types and headphones.
This patented technique based on
psychoacoustic theories of the human hearing system, allows a person
to perceive significantly deeper, richer low bass tones that are far beyond
the physical low frequency capabilities of the speaker itself.

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...
