Why Windows Lost The Battle for the Desktop

The war of the OSes was won a long time ago.

Unix has always been, and will continue to be, the Server OS in the form
of Linux.

Microsoft struggled mightily to win that battle -- creating a poor man's
DBMS, a broken email server and various other /application/ servers to
try and crack the Internet and IS markets.

In the case where they didn't spend their own money to get companies to
install servers, they failed miserably, and the 1 Billion per quarter
Linux market is testament to that.

But, what M$ didn't want you to know, is that the only reason they
wanted to dominate the server, is to protect their desktop and office
applications market.

Seal up the server, and the desktop is safe; cede the server, and the
desktop will fall.

And so it is...falling into the hands of Linux.

That makes sense, coffee houses are mostly social events for me these days,

That's because now that you're old, ugly and stupid, all you want to do is
bother people.

No, I'm not like that at all, in fact, I'm very reserved.
I like to let others talk
and I'm always sensive to how the other person is feeling,
if I feel they want to be left alone, I leave them alone.

You're on the wrong path John,
apps that do useful work are what matter,
not whether you hide stuff, like some evil magician, in classes or not.

Hi John, Re: The typical techno-phobe housewife badly in need

not by open source,

I hate to pop your bubble John,
but she's not using open source, much less Linux.

Which brings up an interesting question...
Does your ex use Linux ?

I'm reading Eckerts "Thinking In Patterns".

Pretty cool stuff; design patterns seem all the rage, these days...

No, but I wouldn't expect her to.

However, the next store neighbors, whose child plays with our son, are both
Linux professionals. It's good to know their are friendly Penguins
nearby.

Hi Dave ( using KNode ), Re: news:Je******** *************** @Cotse.NET ,
You told Andrew: << The link works here
...Whether it is worth reading or not is another matter ;-) >>

So I can say that the news: prefix works in Outlook, 40tude Dialog,
KNode and Google but not Thunderbird or Kadaitcha's hand-rolled reader.
Kadaitcha's " reader " is probaly just cutting and pasting from Hamster files
along with a bunch of Perl scripts.

Kadaitcha ( Andrew ) faked his headers, of course,
he's obviously not using KNode.

Jeff,

Do you know how to dereference a pointer.

It's simple:

* ptr

See, I bet you have not learned that yet.

I am using knode... via kdepim under Gnome. The only way I can prove it is
this... http://akhenaten.kadaitcha.cx/screenshot.jpg

Berserker IV is it's name and it's running nicely under wine, with full
support for MDAC 2.8, thank you very much.

You'll note the snapshot shows follow-ups set. BIV will strip that before
you get this post. Now, take a close look at the snapshot and you tell me
if Berserker IV looks like cut and paste perl scripts, tardfuck.

Most computers default to English, but sometimes we require a different language, especially when relocating. Forgot to request a specific language before your computer shipped? No problem! You can effortlessly switch the default language on Windows 10 without reinstalling. I'll walk you through it. First, let's disable language synchronization. With a Microsoft account, language settings sync across devices. To prevent any complications,...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
