Why Windows Lost The Battle for the Desktop

The war of the OSes was won a long time ago.

Unix has always been, and will continue to be, the Server OS in the form
of Linux.

Microsoft struggled mightily to win that battle -- creating a poor man's
DBMS, a broken email server and various other /application/ servers to
try and crack the Internet and IS markets.

In the case where they didn't spend their own money to get companies to
install servers, they failed miserably, and the 1 Billion per quarter
Linux market is testament to that.

But, what M$ didn't want you to know, is that the only reason they
wanted to dominate the server, is to protect their desktop and office
applications market.

Seal up the server, and the desktop is safe; cede the server, and the
desktop will fall.

And so it is...falling into the hands of Linux.

Hi Dave ( using KNode ), Re: news:Je******** *************** @Cotse.NET

You told Andrew: << The link works here

So I can say that the news: prefix works in Outlook, 40tude Dialog,
KNode and Google but not Thunderbird or Kadaitcha's hand-rolled reader.
Kadaitcha's " reader " is probaly just cutting and pasting from Hamster
files along with a bunch of Perl scripts.

Kadaitcha ( Andrew ) faked his headers, of course,
he's obviously not using KNode.

I notice your c++ code uses deprecated syntax.

How come you don't use:

#include <iostream>
using namespace std;

Hi John, You asked me: << Can't You Comply ? >>
...<< I notice your c++ code uses deprecated syntax.
How come you don't use: #include <iostream> using namespace std; >>

Because I prefer the sprintf()-like stuff ( #include <stdio.h> ),
I don't care if you like it or not... I find it's superior to cout,
it's more predictable, for one thing.

In news:6S******** ********@newsre ad1.news.pas.ea rthlink.net ,
You asked me: << Do you know how to dereference a pointer >
It's simple: * ptr See, I bet you have not learned that yet. >>

You must be joking, Take a look at X.CPP John, notice the * * PP,
( which I mentioned recently here )
PP is the name I like to give to a local pointer to an array of lines.

away one of the three, and starvation results.

I believe that our own junk food culture is evolving towards this same
principle. For example, maybe that guy in /Supersize/ /Me/ got fat because

Calories John... that's all that counts... evolution made us that way.
Using a lot of colors and herbs is all very pleasant, of course,
but I very much doubt that it's all that essential.

The way you like to cook ( and think ),
as well as how you boast so much about your HTML/Java endevors
makes me think that your a girl sometimes... only one who likes FHM too.

There are a lot of women like that around Seattle... noncustodial parents.
Or maybe that's just your bi-ness coming through, like a true graphics artist.

Speaking of graphics artists,
why don't you ever tell us about the ones at your work ?

Have you written anything for Macs recently ?

i think i know what the one asterisk is

but two ?!

what does that mean ?!

if PP is a pointer

and * PP dereferences it to the address it points to.

then is * * PP a new pointer .

what's going on there ?!?!

No, I'm not like that at all, in fact, I'm very reserved.
I like to let others talk
and I'm always sensive to how the other person is feeling,
if I feel they want to be left alone, I leave them alone.

This is quite obviously a lie as you have been asked countless times to post
your garbage were it belongs, in MS groups

I just found out that the brain is like a computer.
If that's true, then there really aren't any stupid people.
Just people running Windows.

Indeed; microsoft have 'won' since they went ~big~. As linux gets better and
better for ease-of-use ***which is what matters to your common as muck
person, not comp-geeks who know the ins and outs of computers*** as you can
see from suse 9.2, it's phenominal in comparison to 7 for instance, then
we'll have a market where people will start understanding both better, and
using both. I've said this quite a few times now, but it's because i
genuinly believe that's what'll happen. When you go to big companies like I
do, novell zenworks and anything unmicrosoft is everywhere, because it's got
less eye-candy and is more customisable. Shove both on a desktop to the
common person and they'll go 'ah yea that one....windows-mey-jiggy thing' -
yes because MS o/s comes with any new PC out of high-street shops and the
like, but that's our fault for allowing them to dominate the market. From
the start fair enough, but now it'd be a case of people STILL buying windows
even if it's their new computer, as it's word-of-mouth that counts, and for
your pc you get windows - it's just how life is at the moment. In about 15
or so years, going from the current trends, people wont mind which to use.

MS have always been anti-competative OR successful, it depends on if you're
a cynic or not what view you take.

Sorry John but Windows is here to stay. There are so many things in the
history of Windws and what it represents to technology today that you
wouldn't understand. I tried Linux for long and it still has a long way to
go, and by the time they get it right, Windows will be twice as far headed
from Linux.

Why is it that people falling over themselves to badmouth microsoft
always use Windows themselves :P

just cos somebody uses windos, does that mean they automatically must

People use windows because the want to, or because they don't have a
better alternative available to their skill set. I use both Windows and
FC3 currently, and have been very happy with both. If you check, I'm
posting from my main development system, XP SP2, Gravity Usenet Client,
and yet I also read/post from my FC3 system using PAN - they are both
under the desk and I use a KVM to switch back and forth.

I have let to find anything I don't like about XP or FC3.

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...
