Japanese and MySQL

33 New Member
I'm having some troubles with the japanese character set and mysql.

I have a list of vendors with their languages in a table.

The language list for Japanese has been stored in Japanese. When I view the tables in phpMyAdmin, I see the proper Japanese characters. They are stored using utf8_unicode_ci . When I create a query, and try to display them on an HTML page, I only get question marks. The page is displayed using utf8. I don't know where the disconnect is, or what I am missing, but I'm guessing (I could be way off) that there is something with how the query pulls the information from the database.

What suggestions are there on getting the Japanese characters to display properly?

P.S. I'm using Firefox on a Mac OS X 10.5 system, so I have full character support for the Japanese language.

Side note to anyone else who may be having issues with Japanese.

I was using AJAX to dynamically update the page. When I sent the japanese characters through AJAX and used escape(characte rs) it would not update properly in the databse. This was the only solution I came up with.

Hi there, a while ago, I posted a question regarding reading japanese text from a text file. Well, since I solved the problem, I thought I'd post my solution for the benefit of other people with the same problem. The plan was to make a script to read and display japanese text. I will use it for making a japanese proverb script and for a japanese language study script.

Hi, I am developing a vocabulary trainer. The languages I want to support are German and Japanese. When I try to store Japanese characters in my mysql database, I do not get the correct characters. The entry of the field is "???" instead of the Japanese character. I tried to store the character with my java application and with the MySQL Control Center. I know I have to configure the mysql database. But I do not know how. I created my...

in my windows app, I have some japanese text that I load from a text file and display on a label. No matter what type of encoding I try to use on the text file, the text always comes up as a bunch of unreadable characters on my label. Are there settings/properties for a label on a windows form to be able to read japanese text? Is it when I raed the file that it gets screwed up (I use fileOpen and LineInput)? Looking for pointers here

I'm working on a client/server app that seems to work fine in OS Firefox and Windows IE and Firefox. However, in OS X Safari, although the UI/communications themselves work fine, if the characters getting sent back and forth are in Japanese they come back from the server "moji bake" (corrupted). Anybody have any ideas why this might work differently in Safari than in Firefox or IE?

I have problems with inserting Japanese chars into MySQL database. This operation results in two completetely different strings that I can see via phpMyAdmin: $word: SELECT word FROM table; INSERT $word INTO table; Both commands are executed direclty via PHP, phpMyAdmin shows the original word (inserted into table via phpMyAdmin) correctly and a wrong copy (f.e. %&c/#....) of word inserted via PHP.

I am using phpMyAdmin to see japanese text in side of the table. However, I can only see menu items in japanese but the content is somehow garbled. MySQL - 4.1.21 phpMyAdmin - 2.8.2.1 db is running on the rental web server so i have limited control.

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
