Which is the most used and popular UNIX system

20 New Member
hello folks,
to the best of my knowledge there is no particular system called as a UNIX..
it is a general term..and many organizations have developed it in their own ways..
like Sun's Solaris, IBM AIX, HP-UX..etc
so, i want to know whether my perception is right..
and i also want to know that amongst all UNIX systems..which is the mostly used and popular UNIX system ?
i am dying to know all about this..
please let me know in this regard..ASAP

thank you..

Any system that sells itself as Unix must pass a conformance test in order to use the Unix tradename. Which is the most popular, I don't know.

I think LINUX is popular now among the UNIX systems.
Because when compared to all the UNIX systems, LINUX servers are fast in execution.
But Sun's Solaris is also a wonderful UNIX system, since it has a wide range of support for SMP.

Well, to be exact, LINUX isn't UNIX. LINUX is just the Kernel, the actuall operating systems are called GNU/LINUX (at least all, that I know), GNU standing for "GNU is Not Unix" (recursive acronym).
For more information, how about checking wikipedia - a quick search offers an article about Linux in general, one about the Linux Kernel and one about GNU.

FreeBSD actually runs Linux applications faster than Liniux but I'd have to look up the reason for that, but it's a well known fact.

The most popular server on the net, now and for years in the past, has been FreeBSD which is a direct derivative of Unix.

And I'm sure that drhowarddrfine would also agree that this does not necessarily mean that FreeBSD is the right OS choice for you. Not to put FreeBSD down (it is an excellent OS), but whatever the motives of the original poster, if the question is drifting toward some variant of "what OS should I use?" the answer is always "it depends." It's not a question that can be answered in isolation. Your criteria are your own criteria and rarely boil down to a single parameter. Much will, and should, depend on your entire range of criteria.

If all you want is "the most popular", then you might as well just run Microsoft. Whether that is your "best" decision, or even a good decision, is debatable, but it is certainly the most "popular" choice. Depending on who you are, where you are, and what your needs are, MS Windows may even be your best choice. Or it may not be. It all depends.

Best Regards,
Paul

Hi Folks,

Well its up to the individuals choice taste and skill level which defines that. Sun's Solrais HP's HP UX and IBM's AIX are all unices. You will find people not accepting FreeBSD as a unix variant ( I m big fan of freeBSD). In my country I find Telcos using more of HP UX since they use HP hardware more while the Banks put their trust on IBM and the Service Providers seems to love Solaris.

In my opinion there is no such thing which is the most popular its the matter of your choice and need and ofcourse DOUGH;)

Rgards,
