dynamically change an element's type from textbox to textarea??

1 New Member
I found this code in a previous post but I am not able to get this to work for me... I am trying to dynamically change an element's type from textbox to textarea with an event. Actually in my code i'm using a onClick event on a checkbox, but this is the original code exactly the way it was in the previous post... I tried to use it as it is and it errors out... Any input on how to make this code work or any other suggestions on how to accomplish what i'm trying to do would be appreciated...

[HTML]<script type="text/javascript">
function changeTextBox2T extArea( elementId ) {
var _el = document.getEle mentById( elementId );
var _parent = _el.parentNode;

// we remove the element from the DOM (optional as seen below...)
_parent.removeC hild( _el );

// property is read-only so we replace the element
if ( _el.type == 'text' ) {

// IE doesn't like too much playing with DOM, so we use the
innerHTML method.
// Using innerHTML replace all current elements inside _parent with
the new
// elements specified in the string.

_parent.innerHT ML = '<textarea id="' + _el.id + '">' + _el.value +
} else {
_parent.innerHT ML = '<input type="text" id="' + _el.id + '"
value="' + _el.value + '" />';

_el = null; // remove any reference to the old element

<input type="button" value="Change Text Box"
onclick="change TextBox2TextAre a('test');" />

<input type="text" id="test" />

change an element's type from textbox to textarea
There is no type="textarea" , and a textbox is an input element with type="text".

You can replace the texbox with a textarea, either from somewhere else in the document or with document.create Element('textar ea').

If you want to write the value from the input to the textarea:

var oldel=document. getElementById( 'inputelementid ');
var newel=document. createElement(' textarea');

var val=oldel.value ;
oldel.parentNod e.replaceChild( newel,oldel);
newel.cols="40" ;
newel.value=val ;

I have no idea if this is more a PHP question or Javascript question, because my problem hinges equally on both. I have a PHP script that queries a database and creates a list of rows for each item, each with their own checkbox one can select to do stuff later. The PHP script this form posts to creates an array of all the selected checkboxes and does stuff. But, on the form, I want to be able to have the checkboxes auto-check when...

Among the option of it are: General Support, Technical Support, Sales in billing, Request RA no. and Others. If they select Others there will be a pop-up textbox for others(so they can specify a comment type) and the textbox is placed on a DIV. I placed CSS on...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
