Opinions of my first CSS effort

Sorry for the cross-post, but I'm looking for criticism *and* advice.

http://www.genesis-x.nildram.co.uk/index.html and
http://www.genesis-x.nildram.co.uk/css/gx.css

BTW: The site *is* a bit OTT; yes I'm a raving fanatic ... :)

Content aside though, there's a few things I still don't like:

1) ... I shouldn't be using literal font sizes, but I just can't seem to
get the proportions looking really professional.

2) ... There's something very odd going on with links in divs that float.
If the adjacent block is set to "position: relative", the links become
non-links - in Mozilla and Opera anyway.

3) ... Everything just looks too big; the logo, spaces, fonts... I'm
viewing this in 1600x1200 - I'd hate to think what it looks like at
640x480. No, I'm not going to ...

4) ... The page is still a bit "loose". I'd like to tighten it up a bit
with a thin, right-hand, vertical bar running the full length of the page,
but I'm a bit unsure how to do that without specifying absolute
positioning (which I really don't want to do).

5) ... The positions of everything on the page are near enough exactly
where I want them, but I don't like the huge empty spaces that develop
when I squish the page down horizontally. I'd love to hear suggestions
about how to keep the current layout, but manage the void space a bit
better.

6) ... javascript: Everyone says "don't use JavaScript". How can I hide
"mailto:" links from spam harvesters without using JS?

7) ... Too many <br /> tags rather than <p></p>, mainly because I have a
problem getting my head around what can and cannot go inside/outside a
block level tag. Too many times I've had "<object> cannot go here" type
W3C validator errors. E.g. why can't I use "<span>" as a container for
"<noscript> "?

8) ... On the search page, I'd like to have the whole Google area (logo,
input and button) centred on the page, but if I do that then I can't seem
to stop it from wrapping when the browser is resized horizontally. How?

My HTML editor is Emacs (Enterprise Edition for Workgroups :) ), on Linux.

I had a look, on a friends computer, at how Macromedia Dreamweaver 2004MX
rendered the pages on my site (in design view). Anyone unfortunate
enough to have access to that software, see for yourself. DW seems
to understand CSS even less than I do - LOL. People *pay* for that crap???
Oh well. Oh, and it missed tonnes of errors picked up by the W3C validator.

Any criticisms, advice, flames etc - hit me.

Periodically, we see questions about which gui package is best, or which database package to use. These questions typically trigger some exchanges of opinion, though of course this no one best answer, and eventually things quiet down until the next round. But it seems to me that what seldom gets asked is: why is it Python's concern which package to use for those purposes? It seems to me that a proper approach from the viewpoint of the...

During the past 15 years I have been writing computer programs with so-called natural names, which means that the names (identifiers, symbols) in progarms are constructed of several natural words. I have even written a C++ book in which all programs are written with natural names. More information and free pages of the book can be found at http://www.naturalprogramming.com/cppbook.html I'm planning to produce similar books with the C#...

I've just had a call from these people, http://www.browsealoud.com offering to sell me their wares. Anyone have an opinion on it ? I'll post my own thoughts about 24 hours from now. I'm interested in what others think - wouldn't want to prejudice other's comments.

The new ASP.NET 2.0 Menu control seems to have some very cool features. But there are some things I don't like. Heavy implimentation of inline style. Some of which I cannot remove. The <a> tags all implement style="cursor:text". The stylesheet in the header begins to get larger and larger as you create a more complex menu and apply styles. I like the menu archatecture but what I want to do is two things: 1. REMOVE ALL STYLE...

I'm having a problem creating a delay before each list item gets moved ( http://www.polisource.com/PublicMisc/list-splitter-timeout-bug.html ). Choose any number of columns, vertical layout, and view as a web page. They'll be a small delay before the entire bunch of list items converts from left-to-right to top-to-bottom order. I expected a delay before each item is moved. It looks like I have to flush the buffer to get setTimeout to work,...

Friends, your opinions and advice, please: I have a very simple JavaScript image-swap which works on my end but when uploaded to my host at http://buildit.sitesell.com/sunnyside.html does not work. To rule out all possible factors, I made up a dummy page for an index.html to upload, along the lines of <html><head><title></title></ head><body></body></html>.; the image-swap itself is your basic <img src="blah.png"...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
