I've started cleaning up my HTML and implementing CSS. So far I've used FrontPage, but am switching over to DreamWeaver. Reading a bit on W3Schools.com and W3.org I see there are a lot of HTML code I never even knew existed. Among these are <em> and <strong>. What's the difference between these two and <i> and <b>? -- Torbjørn Pettersen Editor/Webmaster

The precious input given by Laurent, Martin, Benjamin about XMLHttpRequest in Javascript, has made me think that perhaps I could improve what I am currently doing by using Ajax. Let's make it simple and schematic, to see if there is a simple Ajax answer to this. A. I have an HTML page which has some pure html/css code representing a GRID of cell. The page may also contain other objects (images, etc). B. On the server I have a windows...

Hi, I'm trying to implement a singleton in PHP4 but it doesn't seem to work. The object is recreated each time I call it. The goal of the class is to keep a variable up to date. It's used to display a database content, 25 rows at a time. The singleton keeps track of the current starting row and increases it or decreases it by 25 depending on the user action (pressing a Next or Prev button). Those buttons are submit buttons calling the...

I'm working on examples of programming in several languages, all (except PHP) running under CGI so that I can show both the source files and the actually running of the examples online. The first set of examples, after decoding the HTML FORM contents, merely verifies the text within a field to make sure it is a valid representation of an integer, without any junk thrown in, i.e. it must satisfy the regular expression: ^ *?+ *$ If the...

I'm working to create a base framework for our organization for web and client-side applications. The framework interfaces with several of our systems and provides the business and data layer connectivity for basic operations and such. I've ran into a snag that I just can't think myself out of. Here's an example: I have an object for a Student called StudentRecord. It has properties such as name, grade, identification number, etc.

Since the include function is called from within a PHP script, why does the included file have to identify itself as a PHP again by enclosing its code in <?php... <?> One would assume that the PHP interpreter works like any other, that is, it first expands all the include files, and then parses the resulting text. Can anyone help with an explanation? Thanks, M. McDonnell

I have a <spanof width X px and height Y px. I want to read the text of an article, which is stored in a mySQL table, and pass to that <spanonly just enough text to fit in it, along with a 'read more' hyperlink which will take the user to the full article. I do not want any overflow scroll bars to show. The font-size is set by external stylesheet in em's. How can I determine how much text is enough? Approaches I've thought of:

We have zillion of instances inf instance->m_member in the code. We are going introduce the 'accessors' Get() and Set() for m_member, and m_member going private (and renamed, too). We would like to leave, if possible, refs inst->m_member in the code, but make compiler translate it to inst->Get() invisily, and without using macros. Let's assume T is a type of m_member.

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
