I am using optparse for the commandline parsing for my programs. I
was wondering if it is possible to detect if an option or option-arg
has been specified on the commandline by the user or not. Please do
not suggest default value solutions.

I am writing a tcp tunnel but cannot find a way of detecting when a socket
shuts down its read end without writing to the socket. For testing the
write end of the remote endpoint I just do a:
if not sock.recv(buffsize)
I cannot write to the socket and check if send returns 0 though, because
that involves sending data out of the which may not have come in yet.

In C#, what is the best way to detect whether a network connection is
present? I'd rather not rely on a network request timing out - the detection
process must be very quick.

When a request comes into a page on my ASP.net site and a session is
not found, I want to detect whether the request is an initial request
or if the user did have a session going that has now been lost and
show an explanatory message before restarting the session.
Rather than tagging a 'session in progress' flag on the end of every
request querystring I'd like to detect it using data sent in every
request.

I have a webpage that detects whether Shockwave Player is installed and
the version number. The javascript/vbscript that I use has worked fine
until the latest release of the Shockwave Player. I am still able to
detect the Shockwave Player and the version number when using
Firefox/Netscape, but not with IE. I have my own detection script that

I wandering about the common proctice of some UA's producers to spoof
the UA string to pretend to be another browser (most often IE).
Shouldn't it be considered as a trademark violation of the relevant
name owner? If I make a whisky and call it "Jack Daniels", I most
probably will have some serious legal problems. "Mozilla" partially
appeared because NCSA stopped them from using "Mosaic" in the UA
string.

I need to detect whether the operating system I am running on (not the
Python version) is 64bit or 32bit. One requirement is that I need to
include support for non-Intel/AMD architectures.
The 2 ways I have thought detecting 64bit are:
1. struct.calcsize("P") == 8
2. '64' in os.uname()
I'm not convinced that either one of these is really adequate. Does

I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>".
The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed.
