Rounding/truncating numbers across Windows, Linux, Solaris

1 New Member
I am currently working on an application that runs on Windows XP SP2 with .NET 2.0, Linux 2.4.19-16mdkenterprise and Solaris 5.9. The language is C++.

When I compare the output numbers, Windows rounds the numbers up (for example: 13030.65 becomes 13030.7 - precision is 6) and in Linux/Solaris the number is rounded down or more likely truncated (for example: 13030.65 becomes 13030.6).

I can set the precision on the ostream or output file so that the numbers output the same, however, I would like to know of a way to have each platform round the numbers the same.

Is there is a magic bit or some way to make each platform behave the same when rounding/truncating numbers?

Could you post the code which is creating the numbers, noting all places where you assume rounding is occurring?

I get an unexpected result when I add two negative numbers in PHP on SPARC/Solaris 8. The same program works fine on Intel/Linux. I'm using PHP 4.3.1 on both systems. Here is my program, test.php. <?php $a = 0x81234567; $b = 0xF0000002; printx($a, $b);

When rounding (or truncating) a number which may be either positive or negative, it is sometimes necessary to round either towards plus infinity or towards minus infinity. But those are special cases. Normally, however, rounding should be symmetrical about zero; rounding X should give the same digits as rounding -X, for all X. Some of the signed routines which have been quoted here and elsewhere are unsymmetrical.

Sorry if I got the wrong group. I seem to be running into a rounding issue on a Linux AS2.1 box using gcc 2.95. This program always returns 419 on Linux, but on a Solaris machine, I get the expected 420 output. ------------------------------------------------ #include <math.h> #include <stdio.h>

I'm using label1.text = finishtime.Subtract(starttime).TotalSeconds.ToString() courtesy of Marina to display how long a piece of code has taken. It's been less than a second so far but might go over. The only down side is I'd like this rounded to a max of say 4 decimal places. It gives me long numbers. How can I do this?

Hi all, Math is not my strongest area so forgive me if I use some of the wrong terminology. It seems that scientific notation is immune to rounding errors. For example: (4.98 * 100) + 5.51 // returns 503.51000000000005, rounding error! 4.98e2 + 5.51 // returns 503.51, correct!

Hello, two days ago I stumbled across a very strange problem that came up when we were printing tiny double numbers as strings and trying to read them on another place. This is part of an object serialisation framework that cannot be done in binary format currently, so please no comments about this ,-)) It took quite some time to shrink down the problem but it looks like that C++ does not behave well in regards to very tiny numbers.

I am relatively new to programming (3-5 months) and have to write a program that prompts users for input (number of items ordered at a restaurant), performs some monetary calculations, and then requests monetary input/payment. I am using Dev-C++ by Bloodshed on Windows XP. I am running into a problem with rounding the total expense to two decimal places. EX: If you input 5 for numOfBurgers, numOfFries, and numOfSodas, the total to be paid...

The built-in function round( ) will always "round up", that is 1.5 is rounded to 2.0 and 2.5 is rounded to 3.0. If I want to round to the nearest even, that is my_round(1.5) = 2 # As expected my_round(2.5) = 2 # Not 3, which is an odd num I'm interested in rounding numbers of the form "x.5" depending upon whether x is odd or even. Any idea about how to implement it ?

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...
