I am currently working on an application that runs on Windows XP SP2 with .NET 2.0, Linux 2.4.19-16mdkenterprise and Solaris 5.9. The language is C++.
When I compare the output numbers, Windows rounds the numbers up (for example: 13030.65 becomes 13030.7 - precision is 6) and in Linux/Solaris the number is rounded down or more likely truncated (for example: 13030.65 becomes 13030.6).
I can set the precision on the ostream or output file so that the numbers output the same, however, I would like to know of a way to have each platform round the numbers the same.
Is there is a magic bit or some way to make each platform behave the same when rounding/truncating numbers?

negative, it is sometimes necessary to round either towards plus
infinity or towards minus infinity. But those are special cases.
Normally, however, rounding should be symmetrical about zero; rounding X
should give the same digits as rounding -X, for all X.
Some of the signed routines which have been quoted here and elsewhere
are unsymmetrical.

It seems that scientific notation is immune to rounding errors. For
example:
(4.98 * 100) + 5.51 // returns 503.51000000000005, rounding error!
4.98e2 + 5.51 // returns 503.51, correct!

two days ago I stumbled across a very strange problem that came up when
we were printing tiny double numbers as strings and trying to read them
on another place. This is part of an object serialisation framework
that cannot be done in binary format currently, so please no comments
about this ,-))
It took quite some time to shrink down the problem but it looks like
that C++ does not behave well in regards to very tiny numbers.

The built-in function round( ) will always "round up", that is 1.5 is
rounded to 2.0 and 2.5 is rounded to 3.0.
If I want to round to the nearest even, that is
my_round(1.5) = 2 # As expected
