ASP on standalone machine.

Dear Anyone,

I have a laptop running XP Professional. I develop projects using Visual
Interdev connected to an IIS 5 server. I want to do demos using my laptop
without being connected to an IIS server. Is there a personal web server in
XP Professional?

There was one with Windows 200 Professional. But I heard there were
security issues when connecting to the Internet. If this is the case I can
turn off the personal web server when I'm not doing the demos.

Thanks.

There is a full version of IIS (v5.1) available in XP Pro!

Control Panel > Add & Remove Programs > Add/Remove Windows Components.

Full?

Not if you need more than 10 simultaneous sessions.

I'm afraid it's still a full copy of IIS5.1.

IIS5.1 might however differ from IIS5 and IIS6, but that won't affect what
the OP was trying to do.

what kinds of demos are you doing? why (from later in this thread) are you
looking at the possibility of more than ten users in a demo situation? if
that is the case and you have trouble with xp pro, you might consider
installing a server OS like 2000 or 2003 server on your laptop to demo
with. assuming it is a web-based application you also would run less risk
then of those mid-demo "well, in the real version you won't see this
error..." incidents (speaking from painful personal experience :).

that is always a good policy. if you need to leave it running, make sure
to stay current with updates, that all of your directories are set with
the minimum write and execute permissions, and if possible turn off
anonymous access for the server as long as you will not need
unauthenticated users to connect. securing IIS is a much more complex
topic, however, than can be covered in just this post -- a search for
"securing IIS" in google will give you lots of resources.

That is not part of the OP's requirements. It was as explanation from Dave
about the difference between PWS and IIS.

Your points about securing the IIS installation are well-taken.
