Standalone Executables

Please forgive my ignorance in posting the following question. But I
have been unable to find a clear answer.

I have written a word processor for writing programs in two versions,
one which runs under Windows/DOS and one which runs at the Linux
command line. (Having an identical interface in both is extremely
useful.)

The latter was compiled and written under SUSE Professional 7.0.
Recently I tried to run the code under SUSE 10.0. To my dismay, I got
the following error message:

error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++-libc6.1-2.so.3
cannot open shared object file: no such file or directory.

Obviously, SUSE 10.0 utilizes a newer version of the C++ libraries. I
assume that recompiling the code on the new machine will produce a
runnable version.

My question is two-fold. Will I have to do this every time there is a
new version of the C++ libraries? Or, is there a way to compile a
standalone executable that completely self-contains its own libraries?
My ignorance consists of the details of the compilation/linking
process.

Thanks for any help.

What exactly is "a word processor for writing programs"? Do you mean a text
editor?

Your question hasn't really anything to do with the C++ language, which is
the topic of this newsgroup. Search for "static linking" in your compiler
manual.

Does it make sense to use doc strings rather than #-comments for a standalone Python app? If the classes aren't going to be re-used or imported, do they need them?

Hi, I'm writing a small application in Borland C++ Builder 4. Just for your information, it is a win32 application with a GUI, programmed in WinXP, but supposed to run on Win98. Anyways, my executable seems to require some Borland DLL files to be on the system in order to run. How do I create a standalone application, that anyone can run from any computer?

I have used C# binary formatter to serialize and deserialize a data structure. However, for the same data format( used by the first executable, the same *.CS files), the second executable gives an error referring to the first assembly name missing, when trying to deserialize the *.dat file. When I rename the second executable to the first executable, it works fine. the *.dat file was created by the first executable. Could any one help...

It is possibly more suitable to address this question to W3C mailing list, but I'm trying here first. Could anyone comment on <http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-xml/#sec-rmd> The first statement says: "If there are external markup declarations but there is no standalone document declaration, the value "no" is assumed."

I have a Windows Service I am writing in C# and a set of, let us say three, other executables written in C# (mostly console applications). I want that the Windows Service must do so every few seconds: Check to see if each of the other executables are running or not. If they are not running, it should load them. For this purpose, I am planning the following:

Hey, Can someone please clarify, confirm, or set me straight on my understanding of a standalone="yes" attribute in the xml version element? I assume it means that the xml document containing it is standalone, and does not refer to any external document to define types. In other words, it doesn't use an external dtd to validate any types - everything used would be defined within the doc itself. In other words, you would never see an xml...

Most computers default to English, but sometimes we require a different language, especially when relocating. Forgot to request a specific language before your computer shipped? No problem! You can effortlessly switch the default language on Windows 10 without reinstalling. I'll walk you through it. First, let's disable language synchronization. With a Microsoft account, language settings sync across devices. To prevent any complications,...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
