I have a Split Database. FE / BE.
It has been working fine, on a server for months. The BE exists in a
secure folder used by 5 users who have full rights to the
application. A number of other users need to use the application just
for the purpose of viewing the data. Because of security issues (ie
concerns of the BE being deleted, I want to simply copy the existing
BE to another Folder that is open to these users. If the copied BE
somehow gets deleted by one of the users, then no big deal because I
will copy the original BE to this folder periodically. I, also need to
follow the same principal for a couple of standalone laptops as well,
for the C: Drive.
The problem is, that my application was linked using the Linked Table
Manager, which commited the application to a specific Path to the
BE.
I believe the best approach would be to put a Path Field in the FE
Table that would specifically provide the location of the BE, whether
the BE be located on a local drive, or one of two network folder
locations. I'm considering creating code in the FE to let the
installer Browse for the BE file to establish a link based on the
user, and the BE they will be using.
Is this the correct approach?
If so, how would I link thru code using the 'Specific Path' chosen?
Any other advice appreciated!
Thanks
