I have a weird problem at a client site. This has popped up in recent months and I don't know if it is because of an update to my development machine or something updated at the client site.
I'm programming in Access 2007 and/or Access 2003. Usually 2007, but I keep the database version level at 2003. And my O/S is Windows 7; most if not all of the users are on Windows 7.
Whenever a user updates to the newest release of the Access program, the first time they run it they get an hourglass for like a minute and a half. Finally they get an error that says the .mdb file could not be found. Then they run the program again and it launches immediately and all is well.
I think Windows is doing something during that delay, I don't think the problem is in the Access program. I've put status bar displays into the startup module so I can see where any delays are. And this hourglass thing happens before my first message.
Oh, one more important thing. They tell me if the navigate to the folder where the .mdb is and double-click on the .mdb it launches right away. It's only when they use the shortcut on the desktop.
Any ideas what is happening?
Thanks,
Jim

Just a wild guess, but it sounds like Windows is trying to find the appropriate Executable File based on its Extension (*.mdb). You can easily test this Theory by having the Shortcut point to the Access Executable with the actual Database as an Argument, or verying the Registered File Types/Open With beforehand: - "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\MSACCESS.EXE" "C:\Test\Test.mdb"

The file types are already registered because they run this program all day every day. But I want to try this to see if it makes any difference. The only problem is that it doesn't happen on my machine. Maybe it's a security setting.
I have the exact same problem with Windows XP and Office 2007. We upgraded from 2003 to 2007 this last summer and some of my users started reporting the problem. The funny thing is that if the user has a fresh machine that only has ever had 2007 installed, it won't happen. This makes me think it is a registry error, but I can't confirm.

Hi,
I have a connection which after an initial handshake has one way traffic.
I am sending bursty data. When I write a data buffer (variable size) the
last portion of it is not sent to the server until I start writing the next
buffer which may be 1/2/10/20/30 seconds later. Im using NetworkStream which
says it's unbuffered and Flush() is a no op. When I know I may not be sending
more data for a while how can I ensure that my data is...

An odd confession; an odd request; but here's the tale....
My company has a few PC systems which we have used for about 7 years

Anyway, everything's finally getting replaced by a new set-up, and
there is just one program, an Access program running under Windows 95,
which we want to change for the most minor of amendments (almost
cosmetic). The guy...

I have previously used Access versions 97, 2000, 2002, and now 2003.
I have written a program and wanted to send it to someone who only has
Access 2002.
I removed version 2003 and reinstalled 2002 but I can't see or open the
program (though when I go to "ADD/Remove Programs" in the control
panel, it is there.) There is no icon for it, it is not under "ALL
Programs" on startup menu and I can't start it via "Explorer".

I am using ASP.Net with VB on the 1.1 Framework running on Win XP Pro.
I am trying to gauge the time it takes to sort a datagrid using different

breakpoint right away. Then I click on a Sort header in a datagrid, and it
takes about 1:45 before the breakpoint (first statement in Page Load) is...

Recently and without warning, a report that I was using in my VB.NET
2003 application started to take 10 minutes to load.
It also take thisamount of time to open in the deisgner. I'm using a

Loking at the task manager, my CPU is low, and the memory isn't
changing.
I have two laptops and anyone off my network can open this report up

What are some good ways to extract this kind of information?

I'm using VS2005 and creating a VB.Net Winforms app.
The app uses a couple of web services.
For some reason, when I start the app, there is a 30 second delay when
VB invokes its first web service. After that, the response time on
subsequent calls is nearly intantaneous. As an example, If I'm
debugging and press <F5I'll get the 30 second delay on first
invocation, then it's fast after that. If I stop the program and
restart (F5), I get...

Overview:
Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
