xp internet connection without using router

Let me get this straight.. You want your modem to be always connected to your ISP, even when your computer is off..? And you don't want to use a router.

I'm guessing that you want to share your connection with another computer even when your's is off. That can not be done without some type of hardware like a router. period.

the connection from the modem to your ISP (if its broadband) will always be there as long as it has power, but the connection from the modem to your computer only exists when your computer is on.

Very true. Also, some DSL providers allow "always on" connections. Verizon does, anyway.

If you are trying to share off the connect like barton said you will need a router to do this unless you leave your PC on and share it out like a router but once your computer goes down anyone else getting a connection from it is off-line...

I do not see your reason for not wanting a router??? If you dont mind explaining why you are thinking this maybe we can supply you with a better answer or solution to this issue at hand.

I have a Hub, both the other computer i connect to my hub is not connected to the net .

a hub will not do the trick...a router is needed. a hub is used to network your computers so crossover cables are not needed.

unless u want 1 computer to be always on (with 2 network cards) one network connecting to the hud so all other computers connected to the hub can see it and the other network card connected to the modem. But the computer must be on 24/7 for the others to have internet access.

other than that a router is th eonly way to go...i recommend Linksys or D-Link.

i have a modern with three computers and a hub one of the computer is connected to the internet throught the moderm i which to share this connection with other computers i followed the right proceedure for both any time i restart the main computer the connection goes off and refuses to connect back.

So, once u shutdown startup the other computers (not the main one) can't reconnect to the internet.....try opening dos prompt (for each other computer) type:

ipconfig /release
 

wait 15-20 seconds, then type:

ipconfig /renew

If the hub is unable to act as a DHCP server, you will have this problem.
Also, UPnP may be turned off on your machine. That will also cause this problem.

Find UPnP in the Services MMC or applet.
