internet connection sharing

i am trying to set up internet connection sharing between a vista machine (host) and an XP machine (client).
i have followed guidelines from various pages on the internet but i still cannot get it working. here is what ive done

i gave up on using dhcp addressing between the host and client as this wasnt working so i tried using static ip's instead.
the host and the server are connected by a wired connection (through a switch). the host is connected to the internet through a wireless connection to a router.

here are the IP settings from the connection:
host
wireless connection (to the internet, using automatic addressing):
ip - 192.168.0.120
mask - 255.255.255.0
gateway - 192.168.0.10

wired connection (to client, using static addressing):
ip - 192.168.0.1
mask - 255.255.255.0
gateway - none

client
wired connection (to the host, using static addressing):
ip - 192.168.0.2
mask - 255.255.255.0
gateway - 192.168.0.1

with this connection i can get the internet on the host machine but not on the client. both the host and client can ping each other successfully. but the cleint fails when attempting to ping the router (192.168.0.10). the host can ping the router and as i said, connect to the internet.

any idea what im doing wrong?

Ok, there's something interesting going on here.

Are the host/client devices directly connected through a single wire, or are they connected through the switch? What kind of switch is it?

If they are connected through a single wire (not through the switch) are you using a crossover cable?

If they are all connected through the switch, I would recommend using your wireless gateway (your router) and mask to form your host/client addresses - specifically the gateways (router) are what I see (they would probably need to be the same as the wireless, unless you've got a really interesting home network).

you mean enter the ip for the router as the gateway address on both wireless connections (LAN connection between host and client)?
i have already tried this and it doesnt work.

however when i set up the LAN between host and server as a wireless connection, and the connection to the internet as the wired connection, all using automatic adressing it works fine!
but i need to get it working the first way i described. any other suggestions?

You can set this up to work correctly?

Why not do an

# ipconfig /all

Copy those settings, and then put that as your static IP/subnet/gateway/DNS...?
