WIN2K3 users files disappearing

5 New Member
We are having a problem with files in users home folder disappearing. None of the folders or files in the folder disappear. Only files directly under their user folders disappear. We are able to recover them by restoring a previous version. I have corrected it from my folder by placing all my files in folders. The files are not hidden, rebooting the server does not fix it. And it is random. It happens to one user, maybe a month later another. Now it has happened to the CIO and he wants a fix not a work around. Someone please help!!

That's a really interesting issue. I would recommend turning logging up all the way and trying to catch what is doing it.

Also, are all the users in a domain, or ad-hoc setup?

You say the backups have always caught this, how often are the backups run? Could this be a login script attached to the profile?

all users are in the domain. We run backups daily. We catch it when users report files are missing. And usually I right click on their users folder and click on previous versions tab and check the dates until I find their files. the crazy thing is the folders or files inside of folders never disappear. Just the files directly in their user folder.

Sorry I haven't done anything with this thread in a few days, I've been looking for some answer, but couldn't find any.

I'm going to move this over to the Windows forum, and hope those guys can give you some better help.

Good luck!

Do you have quotas turned on? Does your backup scripts delete things accidentally once they've been copied? Do you have a virus? Is someone running a batch job that deletes files? Is your virus scanner quarantining files? Is the users' documents folder attached to a network share or NAS box? Are you running Vista or XP?

Do all users have read/write access?

I have the same (or maybe just similar - I didn't quite understand your explanation) problem periodically. One of the users picks up a whole folder and drops it within someone-else's without even noticing they've done so. Never require a restore. Just need to find the missing folder and move it back.

Let us know if this could be your issue.

This is not the issue. At first, we thought that might be the case since it was one user that it would happen to. Then I noticed my files were gone in my home folder ( but all files in folders under the home folder were fine) and it happened to CIO and a few others. We did a search on the network for the files they were not there. Also, our users cannot see anyone elses home folder. Everyone has a mapped drive to their folder and they do not have access to others. It's not a virus. Their are not scripts deleting files. I thought it might be the backup software but we are not using the same backup software since this started happening.

I have a site that works fine for days, then suddenly, I start getting ASP 0115 errors with an indication that session variables IN SEPARATE SESSIONS have disappeared! First, for background information, I have a customized 500-100 page that sends the value of various session variables via email to my support site. The situation: On the home page of the site, the FIRST THING that is done is a Session

Here is my scenario: I have a few custom controls that I set up on a form and tested setting properties and appearances. Then I added a couple references to the project which add classes I need to get data from the server to actually do something useful. (These are generated by 3rd party database software.) After adding those references, and no other changes to my form.... all the controls disappear from the visual interface on the...

I'm running Win2k3 Enterprise on a Compaq ML370G2 and I'm getting the following error when I try to access my ASPX pages via a browser. Normal ASP pages work fine. Access to the path "C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.1.4322\Temporary ASP.NET Files\procurementmockup\5037ef28\302fd907\hash.web" is denied. Everything I've found on the error says the ASP.NET account doesn't have priviledges on the folder/files. I've given the...

Hi, I am just trying to setup a new Windows 2003 Server (Web Edition) and I want to test it with the ASP.Net 2 beta. I have installed Windows and the ASP.Net beta. I can not access any aspx files from my web site (I get Page cannot be found. 404). Is there some form of lockdown happening on the default IIS web sites. Or have I missed something in the configuration. My test Pc that I use has Win2K and was upgraded from ASP.Net 1.1 to...

I tried using the Visual Studio setup and deployment wizard to create an msi to install the .exe, config and .dll resource files from my winxp deve box onto a Windows 2003 server. I don't have access to that machine through vpn, I can't remote desktop. I have to send something to a colleague who has to do the installation. So far I have failed every attempt, either with the msi or by simply zipping up the bin directory files. Could...

We have a AD running on win2k3. We have many shared folders. Ive noticed that once in a while users will call up and report the folders missing. To fix the issue i would reboot the system. And vola files visable to all users. Just recently i found another soloution and that was to disconnect all users on the shared folders in my admin panel. Again, vola users can see the folders! What kinda issue is this? Seems like when to many users try to...

Most computers default to English, but sometimes we require a different language, especially when relocating. Forgot to request a specific language before your computer shipped? No problem! You can effortlessly switch the default language on Windows 10 without reinstalling. I'll walk you through it. First, let's disable language synchronization. With a Microsoft account, language settings sync across devices. To prevent any complications,...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
