Howto make you Windows PC act as a USB-mass-storage-device?

4 New Member
I want to play media files stored on my computer on my TV, but I don't want to use the built-in TV-out card. Instead I want to use my stand alone DVD-player, which supports playing media files from a USB-stick.

So, I want to connect my PC-to the DVD-player using a USB cablee and emulate USB-mass storage on the PC to "share" a folder as a USB-drive.

How can this be done?

I don't think that it can be done. Did you consider using an USB hard drive.

I have a USB-harddrive, but I would really like to connect my PC instead.
What makes it impossible? Hardware constraints?

I have sucecssfully used USB cables for peer-to-peer communication between two PCs, so why would this be diffrent?

I believe that the only reason is that no drivers have ever been written to enable a PC's usb port to act like a mass storage device.

Well, I'm still not convinced. I picked up this from the Linux world, where everything seems possible ;-)

"The <linux/usb_gadget.h> API makes it easy for peripherals and other devices embedding GNU/Linux system software to act in the USB "device" (slave) role" from Linux-USB Gadget API Framework.

So why would it be impossible in windows?

Did you actually read the article?

Many Linux systems will not be able to use it, since they only have PC-style USB Host (master) hardware in a PC, workstation, or server. But when you're putting together embedded Linux systems, a USB peripheral controller option is routine; it's often integrated into processors.

I prefer Zend, but I really want something that I can carry with me on a 4gB USB stick, along with my code. I tend to work on multiple computers, so this seems best. So, I am looking for a good PHP IDE which runs under MS Windows, but doesn't need any registry entries, or DLLs in the system directory, etc. I am willing to pay, if need be, but certainly won't turn up my nose at something free. The feature set is the thing, particularly...

About a month ago, Windows XP began restarting automatically on *every* shutdown. I have to wait until shutdown is complete and turn off the power supply to keep it shut down or it just restarts. Some have suggested it is related to USB devices. I have not added any new USB devices. The only thing I did recently was direct connect USB devices to the PC instead if a USB hub. I reconnected to the hub and it still restarts. I had no such...

I use FedEx's online shipping web site via Internet Explorer to print FedEx shipping labels. But, the FedEx site only allows printing to a LTP1 or COM port, and I have a USB printer. I can use their shipping software to print the the USB port, but the online version is much easier to use. Is there a way to create a pseudo printer port so that I can "fool" Windows into sending the print command to the LPT1 port, and instead it gets...

Hello, my apologies for the lame question, but I can't seem to figure this one out. I was recently given a laptop from my inlaws that is running windows 98. I wanted to get internet access on it, but it only had a telephone jack. I bought a USB ethernet adapter thinking this would solve the problem, but alas, it just sits there. It used to have a pcmcia card / adapter, but that got lost somehow. Can I use the USB ethernet adapter? I...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
