Windows restarts on every shutdown

About a month ago, Windows XP began restarting automatically on *every*
shutdown. I have to wait until shutdown is complete and turn off the power
supply to keep it shut down or it just restarts. Some have suggested it is
related to USB devices. I have not added any new USB devices. The only
thing I did recently was direct connect USB devices to the PC instead if a
USB hub. I reconnected to the hub and it still restarts. I had no such
problems for three years with this machine so something must have changes to
cause this problem. Any ideas on pinpointing the cause of the cause of the
problem?

I wrote a program running on windows. I put the link of the program in "Start up" folder and let it executed minimized. Every time when I open the computer, my program will be running in system tray. But if the user would like to shutdown the computer, the OS will show an error about exception. At first, I think windows will terminate all processes when it shutdown.

I'm written a Windows Service to send e-mails on events like OnStart, OnStop, OnShutDown using System.Web.Mail. It works for everything but OnShutdown. My guess is that once my send mail code is executed, other necessary Windows Services have been terminated before it can actually send the mail. I've updated my HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services registry DependOnService value including SMPTSVC and others. My hope is...

I wrote a screensaver, via Visual Studio 2003 in C# and I decided a wiser choice for me was to use an xml file to save my configs. Btw: I wonder if this is why every bit of documentation I've found for saving configuration info in an xml file speak of only doing this for web programming in fact, I get the impression that they have been slipped a mickey that made them forget that there are programs out there that are not web based, but I...

Ahoy, Folks! I've been looking all over for this, but I just can't seem to shake any documentation out of the MSDN or from Google. I've reviewed every .NET article on developing Windows Services in the MSDN I've located. I'm developing a Windows Service application. This service reads its configuration data from the system registry (HKLM) where it was deposited by another "manager" application. No problems there.

Ok, so here is the problem. I'm working on a headless server program implemented as a .NET C# Console project. There is a UPS mounted to this server (though not a windows compliant UPS). I can only talk to the UPS over a special device driver. Through this device driver I can detect that the UPS is going to notify Windows 2000 server to shut down. So I start doing a graceful termination. But Windows shuts down pretty quickly and there...

I have just upgraded from VB 4.0 to VB .NET 2002. One program under VB 4.0 was able to shut down or restart the (windows XP) machine using a series of API calls. (Getlasterror, GetCurrentProcess, OpenProcessToken, LookupPrivilegeValue, AdjustTokenPrivilegese, ExitWindowsEx. I am trying to avoid using any API calls if possible and to use managed code instead. I couldn't find any easy way of doing this but searching the Internet with...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
