My Western Digital External Hard Drive is not coming up in my computer.
Though it is recognized in Disk Manager.

What can I do?

Could it be, that there are no partitions on that drive? In that case, xome OSes will not show it immediately.

I am using Windows XP.

The reason might be because you don't have any partitions
If that's the case, what would be the solution?

I am using Windows XP.

If that's the case, what would be the solution?
Go to the Control Panel, choose Administrative Tools and Computer Management. Then navigate to Disk Management as shown here:

In my case, it's just showing one Volume, but if there's more than one hard drive and/or Partition in your Machine, it should show more. If you have an entry, which doesn't have a partition on it (between Disc 0 and CD-ROM 0 in the bottom part of the screen), then you can right click on it and choose to create a new partition.

If it's another problem however (e.g. your other hard drive not showing up here either), then it will be something else. If so, have you done anything specific with the drive lately? Was it recognised before? Or have you maybe only just bought it?

Another possibility would be, that there IS a partition on it, but in a Format Windows doesn't recognise (although in that case, it should actually show under "My Computer", I think).

it might be that the partitions your hard drive are not in "fat32" or "ntfs" formats which are recognised by windows.

if this is the case the you should use a partition editor like one listed on Wikipedia to convert partitions to fat32 or ntfs formats

moishy,

If you do need to do disk partitioning not supported by the Windows disk manager then it may be worth googling the GParted Live CD.

This is a Linux live cd that has the GNU disk partitioner (GParted) on it.

However I would fully investigate the solutions suggested in post 5 first.

I'm formatting my mirrored drives and installing a third drive for raid 5 to add more space. I have backup exec. Can anyone tell me the best way to backup SQL so I can be sure it will restore properly? I was thinking of using imaging software and creating an image to a USB 2.0 hard drive. The DB is 80 gigs. Thanks NH

I installed a new hard drive in my PC, setup Windows, Visual Studio, etc.. The old hard drive is now on IDE 2, and I will eventually be using it for backup. On the old hard drive are a few ASP.NET applications I wrote with VSS 7. I'm tring to figure out how to move them to the new drive. Of course I could copy the apps to intetpub/wwwroot and enable them in IIS. It's the .sln and .suo files (which are off in some other directory)...

This thread was renamed. It used to be: "shared_buffers Question". The old thread kind of died out. I'm hoping to get some more direction by rephrasing the problem, along with some extra observations I've recently made. The core of the problem is that Postgres is filling up my hard drive with swap files at the rate of around 3 to 7 GB per week (that's Gigabytes not Megabytes) . At this rate it takes roughly two months to fill up my 40...

Hi, Is there a way for VB5 to determine exactly where on a hard drive a .exe file is stored upon the .exe file's first copying to the hard drive? What I need to know is the exact hard drive sector, cluster, partition, etc. information so I can use it later on to determine if the file was ever deleted and restored or moved elsewhere. Thank you.

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
