Having to wait for icons.

I'm using Windows XP. Sometimes when I log on to my user, the icons on my desktop will appear as soon as the blue "Loading your personal settings" screen is done and I can start running programs right away, but most of the time I have to wait a long time before they appear, and if I try running programs before they do, I usually freeze up my computer. I get an error message that says something like "Windows could not locate My Documents. Try selecting Search from the start menu." I don't remember exactly what it says. If I open the Task Manager and take a look at the processes before I get icons on my desktop, Explorer.exe is has High priority, and when I get icons, it goes down to Normal. I can sometimes make the icons appear by changing Explorer.exe's priority to Normal manually, but it doesn't always work. Does anyone know why this might be happening? Thanks.

Google is your friend
A quick check on google found the following

A quick thing to try - change your desktop color depth from 32 bit to 16
bit, apply changes and then change it back again. (Display properties /
Settings / Color quality). This should cause it to rebuild the icon cache,
and sometimes this fixes slow loading of the desktop icons.

Thank you. I should have googled it. I changed the desktop color depth to 16 and back and the waiting time is now less than 10 seconds. This might also explain why Windows Explorer wasn't detecting changes to icons I had edited. I haven't tried changing the icon cache size, but it's very good to know.
Thanks.

Update:
I just upgraded from Norton Antivirus 2008 to 2009, and now I never have to wait at all. I think this problem started when I installed Norton Antivirus 2008. Hmm.

Ok. I want to settle this once and for all. After looking at the source for various, rather sizeable (but not all were so big) web sites that use icons that show up in the addressbar beside the address itself. Just about all websites that use said icons use one of these two methods (some use both even) to make them appear (in the code of a webpage.) : <LINK REL="icon" HREF="/icon.ico" TYPE="image/ico"> <LINK REL="SHORTCUT ICON"...

Hey everyone. I have Visual Basic .NET 2003 and am trying to show images on a treeview control. I have the imagelist on the form filled with images, and have the ImageList property of the treeview control set to the imagelist containing the images I want to be displayed next to each node. It seems that no matter what I do there will be no images displayed next to the nodes during runtime. I tried creating nodes during designtime using...

I'd like references on where to find some good (quality) icons to use for form and application icons (for the EXE). Most of the free stuff isn't that great looking and there isn't a good selection. A site offering previews of icons or purchase of a single icon would be nice. Thanks, Brett

i'm trying to embed multiple program icons in my executable. the only way so far i managed to do that is to embed native win32 resource file with multiple icons. it works, but... when i create a native win32 resource file with the VS 2005 and put there my icons, VS always converts some of the 32bit icons into 24bit - so i loose alpha blending what makes my icons look ugly. I did an experiment and created a icon file with full range of...

I have 6 small touch screens that are connected to my pc to a special video card. The video driver splits up my screen in six sections, 3 across the top and 3 across the bottom. They are all even size. Now the video card displays a section of my screen to the corresponding touch screen. I have a separate app that release the touch(mouse) location on the small touch screen back to my main pc and moves the mouse to the appropriate location on...

Hello, I'm trying to make a gif image out of a total of 5 (currently) images. One background image and 4 small icons. This image also includes text of a specific font. Here are my issues. First... the background image is in color and looks correct. The icons that I merge onto the background image are in black and white. I'm not sure why this is happening. This happens on both my development environment and on my server.

Firstly, I'm not sure if this is the right group for this query, so please forgive me if I am wrong. My problem is that most users I distribute my software to cannot install it on their systems due to not having the correct administrator rights. I'm perplexed over this as I cannot reasonably ask corporations to allow the local secretary to have admin or power user rights just to install my software. My software is intended for user...

This might be a dumb question. I don't know. I'm new to all this. How do you find icons for your programs? All GUI applications have cool icons that represent various things. For instance, to save is often represented as a disk, etc. You know, the small little picture references that give meaning to the phrase 'Graphical User Interface'. But I'm not a graphics artist! Drawing is simply one talent that skipped me completely. Where can I...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
