Restore Vista Dual Boot Options After Repair Install Of XP

72 New Member
Hello,

I recently had to perform a repair install on WinXP Pro SP2 on a system which is dual boot with Vista Business 32-bit.

Since the repair install, the dual boot option menu no longer appears. I assume the repair install overwrote the relevant boot files on the C:\ drive.

How can I restore these options?

Regards,
Rob.

Hi peridian,

I had a similar problem after resizing a partition once - I solved it by using EasyBCD to recreate the boot information for Vista from within the XP operating system.

Good luck!

Well, now the problems reversed.

I got the problem resolved by using the Windows Vista disk as a boot disk. Instead of doing the install of Vista, there's an option for repair. In here is an option for repairing startup files. This restores the dual boot options.

I got both WinXP and Vista back again, and then XP got corrupted so I had to do a full reinstall of XP after all (sigh).

Same problem occurred, the reinstall removed the dual boot options, so only XP booted. Used the Vista disk again, and it said it had fixed the issue, like before.

Only this time, it has not restored the dual boot, and has instead ignored XP completely, so that now only Vista boots.

Soooooo, the question now is: how do I restore Windows XP boot options after a repair of the boot sector by Vista???

Gotta love Windows!

you can use VistaBoot Pro to edit the BCD option. it will show you all the installations automatically.

Due to an earlier posting I read in this newsgroup regarding Office 2007 beta, I downloaded it. After I DL'd it, I got an invitation from MS to get WinVista. I am now wondering if, since both are betas, it is best to buy a new computer? My current computer setup is a Pentium 4, 1 gig memory, 2.66 ghz, 60-80 gig disk drive. MS's requirements for a WinVista computer is A modern processor (800mz)

I am trying to dual boot Windows XP x64 on my computer. I recently upgraded my MB and Processor to 64 bit. I have a WD Raptor Drive (72G 10,00 RPM SATA) that I have partitioned into 2 35Gb (approx) partitions. I loaded XP home on one and it ran fine. Then I loaded x64 on the other and I couldn't get XP home to boot even though I saw the files on my D partition. I reloaded XP Home on the D partition and FINALLY got the dual boot option...

If you develop for others, you probably have multiple versions of Access installed so you can edit and create MDEs for clients in different versions. This works fine under Windows XP, even with Access 2007 installed. It does *not* work under Windows Vista Ultimate. After running Access 2007, when you open an earlier version of Access, no code works, because the references are fouled up. And Access 97 does not work at all. Access should...

Has anyone noticed that Access databases (2003) are much slower to load under Vista or is it just me? I have a dual boot machine (XP and Vista). Applications generally are a bit slower to load under Vista, Access included, and an Access DB of say 5mb size takes several seconds to load out of memory under Vista and is instantaneous under XP. Speed is definitely not one of the new OS's strong points.

I had a preloaded XP 32 on SATA HDD from DELL. I added a new SATA HDD to the system to install XP 64. The PC has no floppy drive and when running the OEM x64 CD, no disk drives were found (no SATA drivers - I'm guessing). I put the SATA HDD in a different DELL machine and X64 installed just fine. I then added the x64 HDD to the original PC, added the X64 Edition to the boot.ini file, but when selecting the x64 OS, the XP 32 installs. ...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Dear forum friends, With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
