Internet not working w/ Modem but works with Router???

4 New Member
Hi everyone =),

Okay, this is not my problem.. this is my friend's problem (He lives in NY and I live in Vancouver) so I couldn't be physically there to see what's wrong...

By chance (or a miracle) I searched on google and ended up here =D!

Here's the problem:

My friend has a pretty decent computer/ High Speed Internet/ Cable Modem.. He used to be able to host CS(it's a game) Servers up until 2 nights ago when it suddenly crashed... We tried to fix it yesturday and nothing worked...(We tried almost everything.. like reboot system..checkin g everything is connected properly.. turning modem off and on... Network Troubleshooter) ...

When he connects directly via the Cable Modem.. It says he has Local Area Connection... but he cant connect to the internet(Theref ore cannot host the CS server)... His ISP also says that everything is working over at their end...

But.. if he connects to the router that connects to the cable Modem... He can use the Internet.. but Can't Host the CS Server cause it's a router connection....

I couldn't be physically over there to see the problems and such (since we are seperated by alot of kms?).. So posting to see if anyone know of this problem and how to fix?

Thanks,
CE

Sounds like any solution will require logging directly into either the modem or the router. Cable modems are usually proprietary and hard to get manuals for but the ISP will usually walk a person through most setups. I believe that the thing to do (especially because the router is usually needed for connection sharing) is open a hole in the routers firewall to allow requests to come in from specific locations. I've never done that (development machine must be sealed) and details are brand name specific, but once a person is inside the router (http://192.168.0.1/ or http://192.168.1.1/ - the former is for D-link) it may become clear and there are usually help pages, too.

The modem has probably had its DHCP or DNS service disabled somehow.
One thing that might work there is hold in the reset button for a really long time.

The thing is... before 2 days ago.. he could just use the cable modem to connect to the internet... host the CS server.. which only has the static IP...

Now with the router.. every time he creates a server.. the IP is dynamic so it comes out different every time (also sometimes you can't connect).. that's why we don't want the router to be involved for the server hosting...(and normally it just sits on the side unplugged)

We're trying to get his ISP tech to come in and give it a wack...but like all ISPs they like to put people on hold =/

How long do you suggest for the reset?

Half a minute should do it. If you give relevant details, like brand, etc., we may be able to dig up extra info. Thanks.

Well, VOIP may complicate things greatly (I have no experience with that). Looks like the manual is here.

Hi, I've been using an Access application I wrote for an office with the front-end stored on all computers and the back-end on one of them serving as an Access file server. Now we're moving to a 2nd office 15 minutes down the road. Only one office will be open at a time, so theoretically it'd be possible to copy the back-end manually every night from one office to another, but frankly, that's pretty annoying.

My D-Link DSL-302G modem/router has a real-time clock whose settings are volatile. To avoid hand keying the date/time via the modem's JS interface, I wonder if there is a way to copy the JS code to the hard drive and modify it to automatically retrieve the PC's date/time. I could then add the hacked JS page to my browser's bookmarks. I've already successfully modified and adapted other modem menus, but I don't know how to go about this...

Hi all, I've try to connect any computer at my office from home. The situation is, my office using a modem router to connect trough the internet. When I try to connect any PC at the office it's required an IP address. So, I put my IP address of my PC at the office. But it couldn't connected, because that was a local IP (it's only can connect on the same LAN). When I check my global IP I've got a number 222.24.xxx.xxx. But that is not my...

PC1 has Vista and is connected directly to my cable modem. It also has 2 NICs PC2 has Server 2003 and is connected to NIC2 on PC1. Server 2003 is trying to host a server (Ventrilo) but no one can connect to it (Works fine on either PC when they are plugged directly to the modem, it just sits at Contacting Server indefinately) So I have ICS set up on PC1, so the internet works fine for PC2. I just can't get the port mapping to work (Yes, it...

Hi guys and girls. I can't seem to figure this one out. Here is my setup: Speedtouch 536 DSL Modem, Nexxt 4 Port Wireless Router, CNET CIC 920W Wireless IP Camera. The camera is set up in wireless mode and any computer on the wireless or local area network can see the camera and access the video. The setup went perfect for the internal network. But I cannot for the life of me see why the configurations I have set to see the camera...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Dear forum friends, With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. I'm particularly interested in Zigbee because I've heard it does some...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
