Let me get this straight.. You want your modem to be always connected to your ISP, even when your computer is off..? And you don't want to use a router.
I'm guessing that you want to share your connection with another computer even when your's is off. That can not be done without some type of hardware like a router. period.

the connection from the modem to your ISP (if its broadband) will always be there as long as it has power, but the connection from the modem to your computer only exists when your computer is on.

Very true. Also, some DSL providers allow "always on" connections. Verizon does, anyway.

i wasn't sure about that, so i didn't say anything :D. now i know ;)
If you are trying to share off the connect like barton said you will need a router to do this unless you leave your PC on and share it out like a router but once your computer goes down anyone else getting a connection from it is off-line...
I do not see your reason for not wanting a router??? If you dont mind explaining why you are thinking this maybe we can supply you with a better answer or solution to this issue at hand.
Thank You Sir, For you help

a hub will not do the trick...a router is needed. a hub is used to network your computers so crossover cables are not needed.
unless u want 1 computer to be always on (with 2 network cards) one network connecting to the hud so all other computers connected to the hub can see it and the other network card connected to the modem. But the computer must be on 24/7 for the others to have internet access.
other than that a router is th eonly way to go...i recommend Linksys or D-Link.
good luck
Sir,
I will clear my question now
this is my promblem
i have a modern with three computers and a hub one of the computer is connected to the internet throught the moderm i which to share this connection with other computers i followed the right proceedure for both any time i restart the main computer the connection goes off and refuses to connect back.
Advance Thanks,
Rengaraj

$cfg = 'http://localhost/php/phpmyadmin';
in my config.inc.php I can login to phpMyAdmin without any problems from my
local machine. But it's not working from the Internet.
To access it from the Internet I have modify the line
$cfg = 'http://www.myserver.com/php/phpmyadmin';

Hi,
I've been using an Access application I wrote for an office with the
front-end stored on all computers and the back-end on one of them serving as
an Access file server.
Now we're moving to a 2nd office 15 minutes down the road. Only one office
will be open at a time, so theoretically it'd be possible to copy the
back-end manually every night from one office to another, but frankly,
that's pretty annoying.

The interenet connection supplied to our router is perfect. When the station is adressed directly to the router there is no pb with internet connection!
When the station turns to the server there is a lot of lost data and sometimes no connection...
The structure of our network is: Router connected to a switch, Server connected to a Switch, Workstations connected to a switch
The gateway of the stations is the router
The primary DNS is...

Hi,
I'm new to the forum - but it would be great if someone could help me! I've been looking around and trying solutions for past 4 days but none that I tried seems to be working.
I started experiencing the problems after I replaced my ADSL with a VDSL. It's from the same telephone company in Japan - NTT - and their VDSL is called B Flets (just some additional information)
Here's the problem I am experiencing:

I'm doing a little remoting project where home PCs act as the clients and the hosts. It all works when I'm working within my LAN, but as soon as I tried to do remoting using my internet IP address rather than my LAN IP, I get a message saying that the server actively closes the connection. When I tried to do this the first time, Windows Firewall popped up asking me to unblock the program, which I did. The second time, Norton Anti-Virus stopped...

HI All,
Is there anybody have an idea of how to detect internet is reachable ?
At present , I'm using ping to detect internet is reachable , but it's
maybe a bad idea , some firewall of router may block ping requesting.
Best Regards,

I have written an application that runs in a kind of peer-to-peer framework. Servers connect to a masterserver, which a client then queries to receive a list of servers. The client selects a server and connects to that server directly and both the server and client sever their connections with the masterserver.
Problem: I have the masterserver set up at a location and it is not behind a router or firewall or anything, just directly connected...

Hello folks,
I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>".
The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed.
This is as boiled down as I can make it.
Here is my compilation command:
g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp
Here is the code in...

Overview:
Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Dear forum friends,
With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. I'm particularly interested in Zigbee because I've heard it does some...

Hello
I'm a network technician in training and I need your help.
I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs.
The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols.
I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
