Link tables to ODBC databases

6 New Member
I tried posting this but got an error the first time.

I have set up SQL server on an XP Pro laptop and transferred 2 databases from another laptop which was sucessfull. I also transferred an access database on this laptop which was successful. Now I need to set up the linked tables in the access database but when I try to link the tables and choose ODBC databases as the source the "Select Data Source" screen will not appear. I have set up my ODBC connections to the SQL databases and they test successfully. I have turned off the Personal Wirewall on my laptop. I have looked at my security settings and I can not see the problem. It all works fine on my old laptop running on WN2000 Pro. I tried to relink through the link table manager and changed the server name to the new laptop name but I cannot link. It must be something with XP but I don't know what. I need to finish a class project this week.
Thank you for your help

I think you're probably right Roxanne.
Although you see this in Access, I wouldn't think that it's an Access problem as such.
With this in mind I'm going to move this thread to the Windows forum and I hope you have better luck there.

There is no error. When I go to link tables and choose ODBC databases for the type nothing happens. There is no error and no window to select the data source. It I choose another type such as mdb It will continue to the next screen to choose the mdb file but nothing at all happens when I choose ODBC databases.

Hi there, i have been searching for a possible solution to this problem, as i have exactly the same problem on my laptop - XP Pro. I am able to use ODBC database connectivity from MS Excel and link to SQL databases that i have set up in the ODBC administrator under Control Panel. However, from MS Access, i can link tables to other files, but when i select to link tables to ODBC databases, nothing happens, no error message or anything, just nothing.

Hopefully someone has some light they could shed on this for me.
Thanks

I am using MS Office 2003 Pro on an XP Pro sp2 laptop. I installed the complete setup when I installed office so that I would get all functionality. Yhe steps are: right click on tables in access, click on link tables, choose ODBC databases as type of data source and absolutely nothing happens. The screeen does not come up as it is supposed to so that I can choose my sql database. My ODBC connection to my sql databases test successfully. I am using MDAC2.8. This is the first XP Pro machine that I have had do this. There has to be some kind of setting somewhere that is causing thisl.

This is really interesting, I am recreating the steps just fine in my database, so here is what I do, I open my database page and under "Objects" on the left side I right click on Tables and chose "Link Tables..." then the screen comes up and on the bottom where is says "Files of type:" I choose "ODBC databases" and "Select Data Source" comes up.

Try doing this and tell me what happens.

Good luck Cyberdyne!

The steps that you list are exactly the steps that I do but nothing happens. There is window that pops up to go any further. If I choose to connect to another mdb then I get the next screen but if I choose ODBC databases, I get nothing. There has to be some setting somewhere preventing the ODBC connection. I am at a lose.

Does anyone know how to use VBA to relink tables between two MS Access databases? We have two databases, one with VBA code and the other with data tables. The tables are referenced by linked tables in the database where the code resides. If we move the database with the data tables to a new directory, the links are no longer valid. I tried to update the links by changing the Connect property and refreshing: Set td = db.TableDefs(0)...

I have a Mysql database hosted on a remote server. Previously, I could always connect to those databases using the 3.51 ODBC connector and linking the tables in Access. The benefit of this is that I can view the data from my desktop, export it to spreadsheets if necessary and print labels. I guess because of a Mysql upgrade by my host, the 3.51 connector stopped working (the password hash problem), so I upgraded to the 5.* ODBC...

I just started using Access 2003, and I can't link a SQL Server table. I right-click on the database window; select Link Tables; and select ODBC Databases from the Files of Type dropdown. As soon as I select ODBC Databases from the Files of Type dropdown, the entire dialog box disappears. No error message. Just disappears, and I'm back at the database window. I have tried this with other databases, including a brand new blank one, and...

I've inherited an A2003 application with linked SQL Server 2000 tables in the back end, using the Microsoft SQL Server ODBC driver. We've set up a test SQL Server database. I'd like to automate the process of relinking the application to test/prod. I've found some code examples here of relinking ODBC back ends to different databases, but they involve deleting the table before relinking. My concern is that the primary key information...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
