Link Tables problem....Way too slow to operate.

Hi,

We have an internal network of 3 users.
Myself & one other currently have individual copies of the front-end
MS Access forms and via our individual ODBC links we have used the:

File > Get External Data > Link Tables > select ODBC Databases
facility to link to our back-end MySQL Server. On both our machines
the tables appear in the window very quickly and if we hit 'Select
All', all the tables start loading really quickly into our front-ends.
This works perfectly.

The problem is that with the 3rd user, the Import facility works, but
each table takes about 30 seconds to link in and then eventually when
you try to run the app on their machine, it is so slow you just cannot
use it.

I just upgraded their MS Access to XP but this made no difference.
Their PC is very new and also loaded with windows.

Is there a fix for this as I need them to use this program, but I just
cannot fix it.

Appreciate your thoughts.

David,
If all the PCs are set up identically, then I would suspect the network
rather than the software. Access is hyper-sensitive to network issues and
problems can sometimes be traced back to the network card installed in the
problem PC.

Try one or more of these ideas, to see if it is a network problem:
1. Swap the slow PC with a PC which is working normally. In other words,
leave the network cards where they are, but swap the network cables. Which
PC is now slow? If the same PC is slow, suspect the card. If the fast PC is
now slow, suspect something further down the network.

2. Swap the network cards between a fast PC and the slow PC. In other words,
use the same network cables, but swap the internal network cards. Does the
slowness travel with the card, or does it stay with the slow PC? If it
follows the card, that card is flakey and should be replaced. If the same PC
is slow, you have a problem with the PC setup somewhere and that will be
very difficult to diagnose in this ng.

Cheers,
Doug

David,

Doug probably has you on the right track to diagnosing the problem, but you
might need to check configuration issues. Are all of the systems in the
same domain? Are they all using the same mechanism to resolve the IP
address of the server? Host files the same? DNS server the same?

Hi, I posted a while ago for some help with my word finder program, which is now quite a lot faster than I could manage. Thanks to all who helped :) This time, I've written a basic batch binary usenet poster in Python, but encoding the data into yEnc format is fairly slow. Is it possible to improve the routine any, WITHOUT using non-standard libraries? I don't want to have to rely on something strange ;)

Why is "Visual Studio .net 2003 7.1 c++" so much slower than VS6 at linking? It looks like "Visual Studio .net 2003 7.1 c++" doesn't even do incremental linking! I make one very minor change in a .cpp from one of my thirty projects and the whole thing links! (I turned on verbose linking to verify this.) Is there something else I need to do to turn on incremental linking? Rudy

Hi, Sorry to repost, but this is becoming aggravating, and causing me a lot of wasted time. I've got a reasonably large mixed C++ project, and after a number of builds (but not a constant number) linking (and sometimes compiling) becomes immensely slow, and task manager shows that link.exe (or cl.exe) is barely using any processor time, but an awful lot of RAM (around 150-200MB). I'm going to keep an eye on page faults since I can't...

I have an Access 2002 program that I install using Wise. The first thing my program does when a front end is opened is re-link, then it checks the version and if needed upgrades the backend. My problem is that I have a new front end version upgrade that creates several new tables in the backend and then links them. So when the program opens up it checks the version in the backend and if needed creates new tables & new links. Now when...

This a little strange. The link in a FE database get corrupted when the BE get compacted, and the FE is not even open. I have checked. The data is fine in the BE. The data is fine in the link in the FE before compacting the BE. I shutdown the FE and then compact the BE. Open the FE and the data 'looks' corrupt. In data sheet view the first columns on the left are okay. Then the last several rows have been shifted to the right and some...

I had somebody (who was an idiot) tell me that tables are slow in rendering? That you shouldn't do things like tables inside of tables. Is that true? I think she didn't know what she was talking about but I just wanted to confirm with people. TIA - J.

I've recently created a form link from a listbox with proper link criteria. However, I had to change a form's property to 'tune' the slow reactions from linked tables over the network (the OnLoad solution and switching controls to Tag functions). This forces me to set the recordsource to Null and doing so, my previous code to automatically link the listbox value (from Form1) to Form2 to be inoperable. Form1 Control: Dim stDocName As...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
