Software selection help Visual & Database

1 New Member
All right be kind, this is my first question on a forum. I need help on selecting the right software to purchase.

I have a database set up using Access, 6 users. It is split into Tables and Applications, no more then 65MB of data in the tables right now.

I have 2 college courses in Visual Basic 6 and have written VBA code in Access and AutoCad. I work for a steel fabricator and the database is written to track material usage, purchase orders, time, and the like. We are using a simple peer to peer workgroup setup; I do not want to go to a server system.

I want a database structure for storage of data only and I want write Visual Basic applications to access this data for entry, processing, and reporting. Using Access 2002 I do not have the control over user inputs that I want. Plus once the application is written, I do not want other user to make changes to it.

I am looking at Visual Studio 2005 Standard edition, using Visual Basic.

What Database Structure would be the best to use, not running on a server system? I would like ho have up to 12 users running different applications on the same data.

Do I even need to purchase a database or will Basic have everything I need?

SQL server 2005 Standard edition allows up to 4 computers at one time; by connecting, retrieving data or writing data then disconnecting, this should be no problem for 12 users.

Pleas help me get started on the right track.

SQL Server 2005 is a very powerful tool which can handle thousands of users at a time and process millions of records in seconds.
Not sure about operating system requirements thou. I thought it should be Server.
It is a good piece of technology to put your hands on but needs a lot to learn to work with it, so keep it in mind.
Access is user friendly, easy to use not as powerful as SQL but can handle multiple users and has VBA which is built in front end application development tool.
I am not sure if Visual Studio 2005 Standard edition has database connection functionality which is most important. You have to check this out. I know that it doesn’t have Crystal Reports.
See comparison link on what SQL Standard edition versus Enterprise.
http://www.microsoft.c om/sql/prodinfo/features/compare-features.mspx
If you are looking for good enough cheap, easy to use technology Access is a way to go.
Several users are not an issue for any database otherwise why it would be created in a first place.
You don’t have to listen to me at all… :)

Folks, I have a quick question that I would very much appreciate some feedback on. We are a not for profit charity organization that has decided to develop a software in-house to manage our volunteers. We have SQL and that makes the most sense from a database solution but we have some issues surrounding the choice of the development language. Some have suggested 100% java while others say Visual Basic. The head of our team has suggested...

Hello All, I apology for posting to many groups but I wasn't sure which group would be best targeted with my question. I have inherited an ASP.Net application that requires some maintenance & bug fixes. I have been asked to also download a copy of the remote SQL Server database that it uses on the background for potential maintenance and changes as well.

I was just wondering if anyone knows if vs2005 standard edition will work for this. I would like to build some windows applications that will have Crystal reports as an output and interface with SQL express. I need low cost software as am on a budget and noticed that vs2005 standard edition is only $226.00. Also I would need to build an MSI (install file) with this that would include the SQL express database (I think it is free), the...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
