Mainframe - VB?

Jay
All,

I am looking for a process to 'authorize' certain mainframe files to
be selected for processing on mainframe using a VB screen?

I mean to say the VB screen will act as 'select/authorize' screen for
a mainframe process...

Is such a setup possible?

TIA

Sure, anything is /possible/ with enough effort.

Jeremy,
When it is real in the filesystem from a real mainframe (as IBM) I think it
is not.
As far as I know is there by instance not one event reachable by VB.

lol. lets. theres only about 20-30 different types of systems that you could
call 'mainframes', where do you want to start?

Thanks everyone!

As of now the process we have involves some manual operation. Like
users selecting a bunch of files (after viewing them) and then
manually edit a JCL to include these files and submit the JCL.

We are trying to generate one process where I am thinking of using one
of the following method..

* Send the files over to work station using XML/MSMQ/MQSeries.
* A VB screen will show filenames (option to select of discard at the
file level) and more options to edit each of that file ( to delete
unwanted records).
* Save the file.
* send them back to Mainframe using a default file name and submit a
job.

Mainframe part can be done without any hassles. I want to make sure
that the other part will run without constant hiccups...

Has anyone done any similar work before?

All input will be greatly appreciated.

TIA

Jay,
This makes things more clear.
I think this is not too difficult.
To send the file from the mainframe you can use FTP (or any other mechanisme
you have on both sides) to the Windows workstation directory.
VB.net can watch if the directory changes and then automaticly change your
file screen and give an alert when there is a change in the receiving
directory.
You can make a proces to edit (remove records etc) the files and the Job
Control Language records.
When ready you put them in the "sending" directory.
An assynchroon process (In my perspection VB.net with FTP) can send the
files in the "sending" directory back to the mainframe including the JCL.
As far as I can see this I asume that the VB.net part would not be the
biggest problem.
To be more clear maybe in the way you describe it is for me nothing else
than a kind of interactive file data entry.
