Learning DB2 for Mainframe - how "hard" is it? How do you do it ?

Dear group,

i am a seasoned DB2-veteran (6 years exp.) on the Windows- and
Linux-Server platform. Once in a while i had a look into DB2 on the
mainframe but mostly only watching other people do the job.

Currently i have an offer to go into a very big shop which runs DB2 on
the mainframe (OS is not yet specified, but they talk about VSAM, so it
will be no UNIX on mainframe). From my knowledge DB2 on Linux or
Windows is a different product then DB2 on the mainframe. On the other
hand most commands are compatible. (?)

So my question is: how hard is the switch from the small machine to the
big machine ? Which documents could be helpful for me ? Do the
administration tools (e.g. control center) work with DB2 for mainframe
?

I would kindly thank you for any hint

Greetings from Vienna

Uli

From a DBA point of view (administration ) DB2 for z/OS (mainframe) is quite
a bit different than DB2 on other platforms. The concepts are similar
(runstats, reorg, etc) but how you do them is vastly different because the
mainframe they are run as batch jobs under TSO. The biggest problem you have
is learning mainframe JCL, TSO, CICS, VSAM, etc.

I would assume that they also have some DB2 for Linux, UNIX, and Windows (or
want to move in that direction) or I don't understand why they would hire
you (unless there is an extreme shortage of DB2 mainframe DBA's in your
area).

I recently tried out the Google "top coder" contest, as a C++ coder. I noticed immediately that they expected me to know STL. To which I say, what the fuck?! I may be missing something, but at what point when learning C++ was I supposed to have picked up STL? I ask because at every job I've had, and every job interview for that matter, whenever STL comes up it's not I, but a manager who says effectively yuck, we don't use that crap.

On my website I have Guestmap that is written in PHP. I did not write it but got it from a freeware site. Anyway it works well, except I've discovered that if someone writes a message and uses the enter key, that will hangup the GuestMap. There is no error message, the icons simple will not load and no one else can enter a message. My solution is to have PHP code remove all hard returns form the strings before they are stored in the...

Hello fellow stylers, What would be the best CSS equivalent of MSIE's wrap="off" and wrap="hard"? hard Text is displayed with wordwrapping and submitted with soft returns and line feeds. off Wordwrapping is disabled. The lines appear exactly as the user types them.

I'm writing a little app in which people open up text files that get massaged and then used to update other files. They us Common File Dialog to navigate to the input files. I'd like to record which files were chosen, but at the \\ServerName\ShareName\DirectoryName level. Seems like the Common File Dialog will always(?) return a path that starts with a drive letter instead of the full ServerName/ShareName/DirectoryName info.

Hello, Does anyone else out there have a copy of this? I'm working through my copy and have discovered that it has no chapter 11... Pages 341-388 are just not there! Anyone else able to check a copy out for me, to see if it's a common problem? I've emailed O'Reilly, no reply yet. Cheers,

(The "C++ Grammer" thread in comp.lang.c++.moderated prompted this post). It would be more than a little bit nice if C++ was much "cleaner" (less complex) so that it wasn't a major world wide untaking to create a toolchain for it. Way back when, there used to be something called "Small C". I wonder if the creator(s) of that would want to embark on creating a nice little Small C++ compiler devoid of C++ language features that make...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
