Accessing external file from Windows Service

Tom
I have a Windows Service that I wrote in VB.NET (2005). I what the
OnStart method to be able to 'read' an external file - in this case, a
file on another server.

The file is on a shared folder on the 'other' server, and I also
included the metacommand

Security.Permis sions.FileIOPer mission(Securit y.Permissions.S ecurityActio
n.Assert)

onto the OnStart method. However, when the service starts and it
attempts to read the file, it generates an 'Access to path
path-goes-here is denied'.

I thought I had the appropriate permissions set but obviously not. How
can I give a VB.NET service the 'permission' to read another external
file (for instance, via StreamReader)? Do I need to give the shared
file folder a specific permission property? Any help appreciated.

Tom

Hi group I have been making a windows service to execute an external application. I use a timer control, I can execute the application but does't appear as a normal windows, just I see it in the windows task manager as a local service. I think it must appear as a normal process. Someone knows about it or has any idea? Juan Manuel Alegria B. Jalisco, México.

Hi All, I am trying to access a mapped network drive from a service that I have created. The service needs to create/delete folders/files on a network drive. When I tried to connect to a folder on mapped network drive (eg. N:\Storage that corresponds to \\FS1NS\SharedDir\), I get an error as "Could not find part of path N:\".

I have developed a web service (vb.net) that needs to access the folders / files and copy files to and from the public folder on the client machine. It is not a public web service, only accessible on intranet. The anonymous access is disabled. Windows authentication is enabled. Web.Config sets <identity impersonate="true" /> Using a test app,...

I have built a web service whose purpose is to copy files from a secure place to client machine and vice versa. The problem I am having is perhaps related to permissions and access rights. For testing purposes, the secure place is setup on the client machine. The client (window app) calls the web service (on a different machine) and connects successfully to the web service. However, when client calls a method that copies the file from...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
