I have been developing web-based applications for around 3 years, first
using ASP, and more recently, ASP.NET.
I am starting to wonder if web applications are really the way forward for
software. And by 'software' I mean applications, (eg. word, excel) not web
sites (eg. amazon.com). I am starting to think, with the .NET framework
being shipped with new operating systems, and freely available online, that
a better way forward is...

Hi everyone,
I have two small applications I have written that I am trying run from a
network directory. Both applications have a dependency on another assembly
(.dll), and I have .NET security wide open. One application is dependent on
an interop assembly (Interop.IWshRuntimeLibrary.dll), and it works fine. The
other application depends on three assemblies that I have written, and
although the executable starts successfully, as soon as...

Dear reader,
In an attempt to obtain the path to the quick-launch-folder in order to
create a shortcut to my application-updates during installation , I thought
to:
1- check if quick launch is used by the user
2- check if a link to my application is there
3- if so, obtain the path (ANY PATH) to the quick-launch-folder from
existing button(s)

Hi,
We have an internal network of 3 users.
Myself & one other currently have individual copies of the front-end
MS Access forms and via our individual ODBC links we have used the:
File > Get External Data > Link Tables > select ODBC Databases
facility to link to our back-end MySQL Server. On both our machines
the tables appear in the window very quickly and if we hit 'Select
All', all the tables start loading really quickly into our...

I am a complete idiot when it comes to access. Now that said, I work
for a computer security company and one of our customers came to us
with an access problem.
They had been running fine for a long time. Then about a month ago
there main server that hosted all the .mdb files crashed. So they
restored everything to a new server (I believe 2003 server).
Everything was fine for 2 weeks, then one morning they came in and the
queries were...

Hi,
I've run into the classic "it works on my box" but doesn't
work as expected on another test PC.
Both boxes have Win XP Pro and .NET 1.1.
On the dev box in Visual Studio the app runs.
On the dev box I can launch IE and browse the site and the
app displays the page quickly - 1 second.

http://bytes.com/images/howtos/technologies_cut_cost_slow_economy.jpgThere's no escaping the slowing economy. Layoffs are being announced and companies are in cost cutting mode. Whether you are a tech at a big company or a small one man operation it's time to cut the fat before you get cut out of work. Unnecessary expenses have to go and inefficient ways of working need to be analyzed and improved.
If done right, the use of some...

Hi There,
I'm trying to migrate a locally hosted page from windows to a private
Ubuntu development server and one of the key bits of functionality
(which used to work fine in Windows) was the ability for the page to
start a file browser via PHP's exec() function. I can't get this working
under Ubuntu though e.g.
<?php exec('nautilus /var/www'); ?>

Most computers default to English, but sometimes we require a different language, especially when relocating. Forgot to request a specific language before your computer shipped? No problem! You can effortlessly switch the default language on Windows 10 without reinstalling. I'll walk you through it.
First, let's disable language synchronization. With a Microsoft account, language settings sync across devices. To prevent any complications,...

Overview:
Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Dear forum friends,
With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. I'm particularly interested in Zigbee because I've heard it does some...

Hello
I'm a network technician in training and I need your help.
I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs.
The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols.
I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
