How to provide trial version of software ?

Hi,

I have deveoped a piece of software (.Net 1.1) which I would like to
release a 30 day trial version of. Does anyone know how to do this, or
if there are any best practices ? Is there any built in support for time
restrictions in the framework ?

Hi Niclas,

..NET does not provide that functionality. Basically you can buy a component
that does that for you, or you can develop it storing data in a hidden
registry entry or file location and manage yourself to prevent
reinstallations or clock rollbacks.

If you are serious about selling software, I recommend you to join some
professional association like http://www.asp-shareware.org/ where they have
private newsgroups and resources with such kind of advice, far from the
public eye.

I recommend checking out the Shareware starter kit availble at http://msdn.microsoft.com/vbasic/dow...s/default.aspx.
You should be able to find some ideas on building a timeout trial mechanism
in there.

Normally you would purchase this code from a vendor. Google for (protect
software) and you will find many hits.

Hello There, I obtained a visual studio .net which I installed a few months ago but then never had time to use. I obtained a new copy of the trial which is slightly newer. However, because I have lost my original installation DVD, I cannot remove the first installation to do a reinstall that will prompt me to enter a new activation code.

Hey, I'm a student from Belgium, and on my stage we have to work with SQL Reporting Services. One of the requirements is Visual Studio .net. So we ordered the trail version a week ago and installed it on our computers (2). Then we found out that Reporting Services didn't work on our OS. So we installed it on a Windows 2003 server. One day later the guys from the IT called our server back because they gave us the wrong laptop, the one we...

Hi, I need to modify an existing application that's written in C, C++ and Visual C++ so the application can be released as a time limited trial version, also the modifications must prevent the application from being reinstalled on the same computer after the trial period has timed out. Does anyone know of any C/C++ code that I could use directly or modified to do this?

Having trouble installing my 180 day Visual Studio 2005 trial disk. The CD that was sent is actually a DVD not a CD. My home PC only has a CD drive. I attempted to install on an external drive using a work PC with a DVD drive and then use the external drive from my home PC. Unfortunately the install process puts files on the hard drive of the work PC as well as on the external drive. So I can not run the software from my home PC using the...

Hello, I would like to store application expiration date in a file and store that file in a secure place, so the application can access the file for all the users on that computer. IsolatedStorage is a good technique but it is for the each user only and is not machine level. Registry is not good because the user may not have access permission. Application directory is not good because the file could be deleted and so the...

Yes, I was stupid not to put files on disk, and or realize that my version was a trial. Somehow I didn't read the fine print. I saved many files on my trial version of Microsoft Work Word Processor. When I try to access them I get error message wkswp.exe application error The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000142) click on ok to terminate the application. I realize I need to buy another perm. version. I just want to...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
