Which VB to buy? VB users please respond!

I am thinking of buying a copy of VB but which one. The MS site does not
help.

The newer versions look like VB2005 and VBNet. But they look like they
maybe the same thing but with a different name. Is VB2005 only available in
Beta? I tried to find a place on MS site to buy and I kept getting VB2003
NET or some thing like that.

So I would appreicate some input from the people that are using VB.

Thanks

..net is the name of the redistributable s/run time platform. The product itself is called
vb2003, and it is the successor(updat e/replacement) to vb6.

How is .Net different than other languages? Can some one explain that to me???

IIRC there will be a Professional edition containing VB.NET only
reintroduced.

VB6 was primarily for Windows development. VB.Net is also for Windows
development. Visual Studio.net is for Windows or web development.

If you just want to do Windows desktop development, then you can save
some money and just get VB.net. If you think you would want to make an
entry into other types of development, then you might as well just get
the full package which, besides enabling you to do both types of
development, also includes many other tools that come in very handy as a
professional programmer.

Thanks for the difference in the packages that MS is offering but that does
not explain what .Net is or what is different about it.

You can create Windows programs with VS 2005 and the .NET framework.

There are some great .NET FAQ's and plenty of articles on MSDN (Too numerous
to mention here) that will get you oriented towards .NET.

You need to be aware that the structure of Visual Basic has changed
significantly from VB6. VB is a first-class object oriented language now.
The syntax of the language is similar but VB 6 users who transition to .NET
often have problems because the language is similar enough to be familiar
but different enough to create pitfalls for the unwary user.

I think that my original reccomendation would stand. You probably need to be
looking into VB books that include OOP concepts too.

If VB2005 is .Net why would I want to use it if I am not developing for
Internet. I want to program applications that run on Windows but not the
Internet. Sounds like I have a problem?

So I still do not have a recommendation.

No, don't know where you heard that. VB-2005 is an upgrade to VB-2003.
It's all .net and will NOT be able to produce VB6 compatiable code.
VB6 is a dead language for the future, there will not be any updates to
it.

..NET is not a language but an operating system layer that encapsulates vast
amounts of code and classes that make developing complex and interconnected
programs easier. Having done it the hard way myself I can attest to the fact
that creating an application with database interaction and connectivity is
much easier.

The .NET framework is "managed" which is to say that the execution of code
is kept under strict control by the system and many problems that were
present in older programming systems have gone away. There is an emphasis on
security and connectivity.

The framework has several languages that can be used side by side. The main
ones are C++, C# and Visual Basic with Visual J++ and a bunch of third-party
languages such as Python, COBOL and so-on available too.

I have several Access 97 databases which are split into front end and back end running off a server. The front end mde is shared by 2 or 3 - absolute maximum of 6 concurrent users. This scenario has been working flawlessly for about 2 years. I am now at a point where these databases need to be converted to Access 2003. I think I read somewhere on this forum that the newer versions of Access are not as tolerant to multiple users...

Hi, I was curious, I am thinking of writing an application that loads a dataset from a database that resides on a server. The question I have is this, if multiple copies of the app will be running at once will there be problems with data updates? The reason I ask is I'm thinking like this: User1 launches the app and the dataset is created from the data in the DB.

Probably this question has been asked many times, however, I have not found a satisfactory answer, hence, post it here. We in the industry know that there's nothing to fear for downloading and installing it. However, lots of others fear downloading software, how would you alleviate, if not eliminate, this problem for public users? Saying, java is like "info infrastructure" like "highway" to a vehicle may not gain user's confidence, does...
