Which VB to buy? VB users please respond!

I am thinking of buying a copy of VB but which one. The MS site does not
help.

The newer versions look like VB2005 and VBNet. But they look like they
maybe the same thing but with a different name. Is VB2005 only available in
Beta? I tried to find a place on MS site to buy and I kept getting VB2003
NET or some thing like that.

So I would appreicate some input from the people that are using VB.

Thanks

The current 2005 version is the beta release of a product that will be
available on November 7th.

I would recommend that you download and use the free beta version until then
unless you have to actually produce some commercial code.

Thanks for that informatin. From reading post under upgrade.... it seems
that VB2005 is an upgrade to VB6 and .Net is a different breed - aimed at net
development? Is that correct. But I also understand that VB2005 will create
..Net code?

Thanks

No, don't know where you heard that. VB-2005 is an upgrade to VB-2003.
It's all .net and will NOT be able to produce VB6 compatiable code.
VB6 is a dead language for the future, there will not be any updates to it.

If VB2005 is .Net why would I want to use it if I am not developing for
Internet. I want to program applications that run on Windows but not the
Internet. Sounds like I have a problem?

So I still do not have a recommendation.

SailFL,

The newer version of Visual Studio Net, named VS2005 is planed for november
7 2005, than it replaces Visual Studio Net 2003.

There are from Visual Studio different packages, that is not about the
primary developing tools themselves those are all the same, however what a
package contains extra.

From VS2002/2003 was a stripped VBNet version named Standard, which could
only be used with the program language VBNet and from which parts where
stripped.

How that will be for the 2005 version is not yet clear, however for 2005 are
as well planed all kind of Express versions. Those are primary intended for
learning purposes as the VBNet standard was. Probably will those Express
versions piece by piece be prized is told at about 50 dollar.

I hope this helps,

IIRC there will be a Professional edition containing VB.NET only
reintroduced.

VB6 was primarily for Windows development. VB.Net is also for Windows
development. Visual Studio.net is for Windows or web development.

If you just want to do Windows desktop development, then you can save
some money and just get VB.net. If you think you would want to make an
entry into other types of development, then you might as well just get
the full package which, besides enabling you to do both types of
development, also includes many other tools that come in very handy as a
professional programmer.

Thanks for the difference in the packages that MS is offering but that does
not explain what .Net is or what is different about it.

I have a compiled file (.mde) and need to replace the file. I use Access 97 and SQL-server. I have about 150 users. I have made a shortcut to the startmenu for this file. Its impossible to replace the file when any of the users have the file open. I often need to upgrade with new version of the application. I find this problem very difficult. Helge

I have several Access 97 databases which are split into front end and back end running off a server. The front end mde is shared by 2 or 3 - absolute maximum of 6 concurrent users. This scenario has been working flawlessly for about 2 years. I am now at a point where these databases need to be converted to Access 2003. I think I read somewhere on this forum that the newer versions of Access are not as tolerant to multiple users...

Hi, I was curious, I am thinking of writing an application that loads a dataset from a database that resides on a server. The question I have is this, if multiple copies of the app will be running at once will there be problems with data updates? The reason I ask is I'm thinking like this: User1 launches the app and the dataset is created from the data in the DB.

Probably this question has been asked many times, however, I have not found a satisfactory answer, hence, post it here. We in the industry know that there's nothing to fear for downloading and installing it. However, lots of others fear downloading software, how would you alleviate, if not eliminate, this problem for public users? Saying, java is like "info infrastructure" like "highway" to a vehicle may not gain user's confidence, does...

These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers.
