Force close of open files

I have an app that is designed to grab addresses from a central database and
create a Word template containing them as AutoText entries. I copy it to a
location where it can be accessed by all my clients. This gets run
overnight.

My problem is that if anyone leaves Word running then the template is still
in use and the attempt to overwrite the old version of the files fails.

Does anyone have a way of forcing a close of any open connections?

Hi. I would like to know if it's possible to force a dialog box to "expire" after so many seconds? The scenario is that I'm holding various objects in my session. Before it times out, I want to notify the user to click Okay to save the work now OR click cancel to refresh the page. What if the user doesn't respond to the dialog box for a long time and then hits save? Well the session has already timed out! So, can I have the dialog...

How do I force a browser to download a file instead of displaying it? In other words I have a page with MP3 and WMA files on it and I would like for the visitor to download the file instead of play it without having to right-click and save. How can I force the browser to pop up the "save file as" dialog box instead of playing it? I know that I can encapsulate it in a zip file which will download and open WinZip. Thanks

Hi I have a python application that writes a lot of data to a bunch of files from inside a loop. Sometimes, the application has to be interrupted and I find that a lot of data has not yet been writen (and hence is lost). How do I flush the buffer and force python to write the buffers to the files ? I intend to put this inside the loop. Thanks.

I have a Window based application that shows up still running in the task manager when I close it. It reaches the "this.close" statement and then it stops at the "}" at the section of the following code after the "Application.Run(new VMSMain());": static void Main() { Application.Run(new VMSMain()); }

I have a script that parses window.location.hash to figure out which xml file to load. The xml files populate a page on a framed site. The code works correctly to a point. If I have a seperate html page to support each xml it works. I would like to eliminate the individual html pages becuase only one should be needed. When I use one page the first link works, then the second one does nothing (doesn't refresh the frame). If I click to a...

Hey everyone, I've been working on a C++ program that uses several threads to read data from a large file into several buffers at speed and pass them to different classes at different rates. I'm working in linux using Eclipse as my editor and a simple makefile to compile the files. My problem is that my main reader class (FileReader:- a thread class) does not seem to recognise the close() function that, as we all know, is the complement to...

If auto-format is turned off in VS2008, there is apparently no way to indent a line. Under Tools->Options->Text Editor->C#->Formatting, there are three checkboxes. Unchecking those seems to cause this behavior. I'd simply like to have the tab key insert a tab at the beginning of a line. I believe that there were publlished macros for doing this in earlier VS versions, but I expected this to be 'fixed' in VS2008. Yes, I realize someone...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
