Other Apps Dont Play Nice With .NET?

I built a vb.net windows app for our customers that utilize our services.

This app uses Port 23(telnet) to communicate data to/from the user for order
entry and stock status as this form of communication works with my AIX
Server.

I also use SQL Server to record information of what the customer is looking
for (by the way the customers knows this and are ok with it - it is in the
agreement on which they agree to use the software. Often they like it
because if they get a price and dont buy it our salesman will call back with
a better price.)

The problem is that I have noticed that those customers running software
such as these the (my)application locks after it is open and in use for a
while:

Yahoo Messgenger(Most Reports), Kazza, Weatherbug, iMesh, AOL Instant
Messenger

Interestingly enough, MSN Messenger users do not have the (my)application
lock up on them. Those customers not having any of the above never
experience these issues. I have gotten reports of this occuring on all
platforms (98 - XP).

Has anyone have an idea of what might be going on here or have encountered a
similar problem?

I have been developing web-based applications for around 3 years, first using ASP, and more recently, ASP.NET. I am starting to wonder if web applications are really the way forward for software. And by 'software' I mean applications, (eg. word, excel) not web sites (eg. amazon.com). I am starting to think, with the .NET framework being shipped with new operating systems, and freely available online, that a better way forward is...

Beside its an opensource and supported by community, what's the fundamental differences between PostgreSQL and those high-price commercial database (and some are bloated such as Oracle) from software giant such as Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, and Sybase? Is PostgreSQL reliable enough to be used for high-end commercial application? Thanks

I'm confused about what I can use C# and VS.NET for. I have both Visual Studio 6.0 and Visual Studio .NET - which one do I use? If I want to build a basic VB app, I assume I can use the VB 6 component in Visual Studio 6.0. But If I want to build a C# application - does that mean I have to use VS.NET? And if I do write an application in C# does that mean it can only run on a Windows box with the .Net Framework? Do all C# apps require...

Hi All, In Visual Basic .NET , your function definition might requirre you to return a value but (accidently/intentionally) you dont put any 'return value' in the function. In this case VB Compiler does not generate any warning. Is there any way to make the compiler generate this and other obvious warnings, is there any switch, or still VB.NET development team assumes that

I have tried multiple methods of encrypting the connection string. Everyone has made it sound easy. I have encrypted the connection string in the app.config file, code behind, etc. Basically try this test. Create a new app and just add a connection string. Add whatever encryption that you would like to use. Build the app. Go to the app's bin directory and

Hi Group, I want to get into writing portable apps that can run solely off a USB stick, but I have a few problems. I'm originally a java/.net developer, but I don't want it to be a requirement that the host computer has .net or a jre installed. I also am not very fond of developing with VC++ *cry*. Also done some perl, so I checked out ruby, python, python.... hey

Hi, i want to emulate a (synchronous) BroadCastSystemMessage with EnumWindows and SendMessage. I dont want to use the BroadcastSystemMessage because it needs the SE_TCB_NAME Privilege (you dont have this in normal). So i decided to use the EnumWindows with SendMessage. What i try here is to pass a WM_USER+1111 with LParam and WParam, pointing to strings. But when i try to get the strings at the other end with Marshal.PtrToStringAnsi,

Most computers default to English, but sometimes we require a different language, especially when relocating. Forgot to request a specific language before your computer shipped? No problem! You can effortlessly switch the default language on Windows 10 without reinstalling. I'll walk you through it. First, let's disable language synchronization. With a Microsoft account, language settings sync across devices. To prevent any complications,...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Dear forum friends, With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
